What game made you raised your standards for future games?

My standards were pretty low themselves for story/music/and even gameplay until the following:

Final Fantasy X for story and music

Shadows of the Colossus for gameplay.

mario 64 got me started with gaming. but then games like god of war 1 and 2, kingdom hearts 2, medal of honor european assault, san andreas, and call of duty 3 got me ready for future games.realDboiii

Last Gen- The 1st Shadow Hearts, God of War, Final Fantasy XII, & Disgaea

The only game this gen that causes me to raise my standards is Heavenly Sword... that game has an incredibly 'next-gen' level of polish to every aspect of it. I love Warhawk but I can't say that it really caused me to raise my standards.. it's not that it does anything new, it just does it all really well. There have been plenty of other great games this gen (Skate gives me new hope for the genre)... but even with the awesome games coming out this year... the only standard raising ones I can think of aren't out until next year.

Well i'm going to reply about every system not just playstations.

NES/master system days: Mario/Sonic.

SNES/mega drive/Amiga days:Mario 3,street fighter 2,sensible soccer,sonic.

Playstation,n64 days: Resident evil 2,golden eye.gran turismo

Playstation 2/gc/xbox days: Devil may cry,god of war,ninja gaiden,shadow of the colususs,res evil 4,halo 1,2,pgr,gran turismo 3,4, too many to name.

Xbox 360/wii.ps3 days, gears of war,bioshock,forza 2,halo 3,oblivion,dead rising,heavenly sword.

PC days half life 2.

Those were my games that made my standards improve for each genre over the consoles life span.

Games that made me go "WOW this is next gen"

Sonic.

Mortal kombat(those graphics on the amiga back in the day were amazing)

resident evil 2.

Devil may cry 1.

Gears of war.

Each of those games was the first timei thought wow this is what next gen is capable of, i wont get that same feeling again untill next gen.

Last Gen: Shadow of the Colossus (I have never seen boss battles like that before)

New Gen: Resistance: Fall of Man (amazing overall and great quality)

Graphics: Gears of War

Story: God of War

Gameplay: Any Halo (not becuase its inventive or new, but because the control scheme worked perfectly and everything flowed)

Score: Metal Gear Solid

Lasting Appeal: Turtles Arcade Game (I will never get tired of that game)

The games that raised my standards for future games were several 64 games. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark as far as FPS only. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time as far as action adventure. Sony's FFVII and FFX as far as RPGs.
