What good is folding? I mean besides doing something good for all mankind.
All you can do is look at your name on the website and try to get to the top of the list.
I want to win an LCD tv from it. Can I? No. How about a trophy for Home? No.

So what then? What is there to do with it?

Actually, It would be kind of neat if you got a trophy or something to put in home from folding once you have submitted your 50th, 100th, 500th, and 1000th WU.

Thats human nature... People won't even turn off one light bulb in a house to help reduce pollution. That said, wouldn't be a bad thing for Sony to give out a free downloadable game once you reach a milestone in time spent running Folding...

I actually remember hearing something about them considering giving virtual money to be used with the store for folding.  I only remember because there was a fancy picture of a ps3 with dollar bills coming out of the disc slot. lol

So who knows, maybe there will be monetary incentive eventually.

Helping all of mankind and a future generation isn't enough incentive?

When this thing helps potentially find the cure for cancer for your kids, you'll be thanking Sony and folding@home and yourself that you used it.

This is why I play games, so i don't have to deal with selfish people like you. I'm a proud folder and I don't want nothing from it at the end of the day except to maybe keep someone from losing a loved one.

Yeah. I ask my doctors this question all the time.

"What good is medicine? I mean besides from healing and helping people."

Pehaps as your brain begins to shrink and you forget who the people are in your life, you will thank Stanford and the folders for the "reward" of being able to spend your last years with clarity, and the "trophy" of a brain that doesn't shrink.

Sheesh!

that has to be the most stupid, ignorant, selfish question of the year. I hope you accidentally phrased it this way.

This is the part where you defend yourself with...um....logic?

Hey. I want an LCD Plasma for my little bit of leaving a console on...;)

Nah, I'd feel to guilty taking a reward...

But apparently, that's just me...

Guys ur looking at the OP the wrong way. i'm sorta wondering too. i've been usinjg F@H for quie a while but even if it supposedly helps finds a cure for cancer, how much is it going to help? im sure the OP is saying why do we even need to use F@H if in the end, we get nothing in return and people in stanford have a 1-0% of getting a cure for cancer. Unless its guaranteed, why don't we just donate to more professional industries than just one measly uniersity? that's probably what he/she is trying to say, not saying "finding a cure for cancer is useless, we shuld get a reward".

ummm you do know that it isnt a "measly university" its one of the most highly praised research facilities in the south western united states. not only that but universities are the workhorse of the research world. Also, why should we get something in return for doing something that takes no time out of our schedules, takes no energy or resources on our parts yet helps further the research to find treatments and cures of ilnesses ranging from alzheimers to cancer? Sure, we might not be able to completely cure any of these in the next decade, but the advancement of technology that we are helping along is going to contribute to better TREATMENTS for them as a worst case scenario. If youre looking for a reward go find a lost dog. If you want to sleep at night knowing you can be contributing to a good cause out of selflessness than continue folding.

I hate wasting computer time so whenever I'm out or not on it, I always leave it doing something like defragging, downloading, virus scanning or whatnot.  Folding@Home is perfect for me.  It's on whenever I leave my PC.  It's not hindering my PC usage at all and it never bothers me.  In a way, I'm not really doing anything, folding is just using my junk time.  If I'm not really giving up anything that means anything to me, why should I demand a TV or trophy for it.  Just enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you are not wasting computer resources and time.

Ok, a good point has come out of the disturbing greedy thread.

IF there was a trophy or virtual incentive then we might see more than 35,000 PS3's folding at anyone time.  that would be superb.  If a virtual non-monetary incentive was there it could really boost the research, imgaine if half the PS3's sold were folding right now!

Still, why anyone would only fold because of a virtual trophy is beyond me.
