I'm installing a new firmware update and the lights go out? I've been told that I simply lose my PS3 if it's not on warranty. Is that correct?

that's kinda hard, since i live down here in Venezuela... I'm pretty sure Sony here won't honor playstation technical service since that is not an official Sony product right now over here. All i want to know is if I should brace myself while upgrading the firmware because i could lose my precious PS3 :(

Buy an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). Wikipedia will tell you what it is. Basically, it'll protect your electronics from unforseen power outages.
