the quality of the hardware and the quality of the first party games.
also the fact that Blue-ray helps games is another reason, the latter half of this gen will prove that Blue-ray is crucial for games development. think of it this way, with PS1 CD's were eventually used to their fullest capacity, PS2 DVD's were used to their fullest capacity and same will happen to Blue-ray.
OH and Free Online play, why pay when you can play for free.
ooh ooh also PlayStation Home :D
p.s. lets not forget MGS4. 9.6+ guaranteed 8)
As a former 360 owner (and I loved my 360 util it died). Can I add that PSN is better than Xboxlive in prinicpal. I'll explain. Xboxlive ALWAYS drops out, always loses connection, always lags. When me and my friend were having co-op fun in games we'd have to restart at least 5 times over an hour period, and we both swear blind our internet connections are fine.
With PSN I've not yet had an issue, I'm on my 300th kill on Resistance online, and I've never seen lag or been kicked out. Now it may not be as poslished as Xboxlive but it's free and the core element (playing online) is better.
There are also many logical reasons why the PS3 is good value also, due to the built in wifi, built in rechragable battery, 60gb hdd, and free PSN. Those alone make it the cheapest of the two HD consoles out there and I've not even had to mention the HDMI or Blu-Ray.
I know this is not a console wars thread, and I want to point out I loved my 360 and I now for a fact it is a great machine with great games. My only gripes where never meeting a European or Japanese gamer online (it is all Americans which I have no issue with but it makes you worry if you've chosen a console that is destined to not be universally excepted) and the red rings of death, if it weren't for those red rings, I would not own a PS3 and have seen for myself the cost advantages, online advantages and the so far launch based universal appeal.
Best answer is to look at the game offerings, because the capabilities of it and the competing console are about the same.Cellien
I completely agree.
If you ignore hardware reliability. And the BluRay format. And the Wifi. And the free online service. And the user replaceable standard laptop hard drive.
I think it's time for a thread lock. The infiltrating trolls have rendered this thread a System Wars-style thread now.
I own all three consoles and here's my opinion. First off I love all of them but the PS3 does have some things that set it apart.
First, the PS3 has free online multiplayer. I play Resistance and Motorstorm online a lot and so far, no lag. The multiplayer doesn't use voice chat as much as Live does but this is my only complaint. Sony should make a cheap headset that comes with every console like microsoft did. Overall though I'm very satisfied with the online multiplayer. Microsofts is good too and a bit more integrated but its $50 a year (over 5 years thats about $250, how many games could you have bought with that?). Nintendo's online multiplayer is a joke.
Second, PS3 has built in wireless. I don't know about you but I hate having cables running through my entire apt. Wireless rocks.
Third, replacable hard drive. I can easily just buy a HD at store and swap it out with my old one if the need arises, for a lot cheaper than the 120gb for Xbox 360.
Fourth, the ability to play HD movies. Yes, I know the "Not everyone has HDTVs" argument but I dont buy my game consoles for everyone else do I? I spent $1000 on an HDTV about a year before I got my PS3 and god forbid I actually want to buy HD movies to take full advantage of said HDTV. Call me crazy but yeah, I actually want to use my HDTV to its fullest.
Fifth, and this is a matter of opinion, the sony console exclusives are very good and my favorite of all three consoles. God of War, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Warhawk, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Ratchet and clank, Killzone, Big little planet are all coming within the next year or two.
Sixth, come this fall, Home. Looks to be a very immersive and fun way to meet other gamers. Looks like it will be just fun too, cusstomizing your apt and avatar etc. Looking forward to this.
Seventh, it is far more reliable a piece of hardware when compared to the Xbox 360. As everyone knows, the 360 is notoriously unreliable with its 3 rings of death. I got a launch unit back in nov. 2005 and at the beginning of January 2006 it died. Got one back and its been working good until recently where the dvd drive will just eject the game/dvd without notice. It's annoying. Also the fan on that 360 is loud! My ps3 runs smooth and quiet. Haven't even had a freeze up issue and I've had it since new years.
Me tooIt's going to have some great games that you can't play anywhere else. That's why I bought it, anyway. For now I play my 360 a lot and almost never turn on my PS3, but I know that that's going to change when Lair comes out.

Summed up what I wanted to say PERFECTLY
PS3 is not better according to the consumer. Demand is so low that Sony dropped the 20gb version of the PS3. Playstation00nice try on spinning that. The 20GB PS3 was dropped because retailers(and consumers) would rather have the 60GB. so why keep producing a product that nobody wants?
everyone has an opinion and a preference on which system is better and which is the greatest out there. although i will say i think a lot of people say the PS3 sucks just because they don't have $600 bucks to buy one (which isn't cheap but if you have it and want one then it's up to you) so since they can't get one they just say it sucks. in my opinion the PS3 is the best because 1. there's so much upside. the bluray (i don't care about the movie HD vs. bluray debate) option gives programers so much extra space to create. also, once programers get a hold of the system the games they turn out will be incredible. 2. Sony has won the last two generation console wars based on games but in both generations they were the weaker system hardware-wise. this gen they're clearly stronger (1st gen PS3 games are already on par and in some cases better looking than 2nd year Xbox360 games) so now all things are in their favor. 3. the only reason i'd say wait is maybe a xmas price drop (but it won't be too much so if you want one get it now) and there are a lot of good games coming out in the next 2 to 3 months. that and the fact that the PSN is FREE and is quickly growing and expanding and becoming more user friendly and more and more crowded with downloadable content & online games makes the PS3 my favorite console. sdkingsht
