Hideo Kojima reportedly said that they did push the PS3 to its limit for MGS4 and he was suprised that the released game's graphics weren't better. I guess he was looking for photorealism.
Maybe there are other ways to use the PS3's abilities that weren't attempted.
My vote for best looking PS3 game goes to ---> Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
Bear in mind I haven't played MGS4 nor am I interested in it ... I never "got" the MGS games. They just do not appeal to me at all.
MGS4 is the best looking game on the PS3, and there is no game out yet that comes close to pushing the PS3 to its limits.

Yeah i agree with you 100%, just think about ps3's blue-ray capability getting pushed to it's limits...
Just think for yourself what would it be like
uncharted used 40% of the PS3's "power" and had an engine built to work with the ps3's architecture specifically.
MGS4 is probably has cell working at 60-65%. no game even has ps2 working at 100% God of War 2 probably has it at 85%-90% kojima said hes got ps3 working a good sweat to promote his game
you know what makes a big differnece is that MGS4's engine is not built ground up for the ps3's architecture it is the next gen version of what the past MGS's used. it's like looking at gran turismo 4 (ps2)next to gran turismo 5(ps2). same basic engine... different machine. has nothing to do with the ps3's graphics chip and cell.
every graphics chip has a personality.. you could say.. for example the xbox 360's graphics chip calls for a more generic videogame look. whereas ps3's graphic chip can create a more organic realistic look. when a game engine is built around the system with this is mind is where you will see this in motion. you can use heavy rain as an example of what im trying to explain.
if you're going to state that MGS4 pushes ps3 to the limit you should at least acknowledge the fact that with a game like MGS4 pushing the sysytem to its limits that means that MGS$ is about as good as the MGS engine can look on ps3... its the same enging that was used for the ps2 games only now its got ps3 hradware pushing the engine further.
its the same reason why halo3 looks very similar to halo2. it's the same engine only now its got stronger hardware behind it.
why does grand theft auto look so much diffrent than any other previous grand theft auto? because its a completly differnt engine built specifically for next gen hardware.
Looking at Sony's history with the PS2, no one can fairly say the PS3 out for only a couple of years, is now maxed-out. Wait 7-8 years then maybe. No developer is knowledgable or experienced enough to take advantage of the chip yet at %100 (if that's even possible). It's just too early... Dispite what Kojima says. He may be brilliant, but he's not always right. It's not like he built the system.
I do think MGS4 is the "current" best looking game on the PS3. Looks like high-level PC graphics, which is great. I believe KZ2 will take top spot based on it's more realistic CG-level graphics, motion blur and more realistic animations.
theres not even game that uses ps2's resources to about 100% ( that had a graphics enging built specifically for it)
MGS4 pushes the metal gear solid game enging to its limits considering ps3's hardware specs. so yea its very possible that MGS4 is using 100% of ps3's resources. but its not fair to use that against it or even for it. all that is saying is that MGS4 looks as good as it can look with the ps3's hardware.
no game developers will ever be able get 100% out of any console, PC, whatever. but they will get to a 75-85% that matters with an engine built specifically for the hardware. thats when our jaws will drop.

I dont think MGS4 pushes the ps3 to its limits...
but it pushed blue-ray to the limits
its not fair to say game like ratchet and clank, MGS, gran turismo, are ps3's knights in shining armor because they look the best because they have nothing to do with the ps3's architecture. those game and just about every other game are built around old-age game engines that wreent built with ps3's hardware in mind! those games are using the ps3's procesing capabilities and thats it the graphics chip can handle far far better engines.
uncharted is a game that was built specifically for ps3's hardware, therefore, it and any sequels have a specififc organic, realistic look to them
heavenly sword was one
heavy rain is one of them.
mag is one of them.
eight days would have been one.
afrika is one of them.
........
call of duty is NOT one of them
oblivion is NOT one of them
rainbow six is NOT one of them
these are all basically just ports from last gen to this gen. the engines are optimized to utilize stronger hardware. but do not have anything to do with what the hardware was meant to dish out. its not fair to say that a game whos enging wasnt built for the hardware is the consoles best looking game.
ps3's best looking game is uncharted because it's the only one released. forget opinion.
xbox 360's best looking game would probably be Gears of war. because it's engine was made to work with its hardware specifically
Well... consoles don't reach their limits until well after most developers move on to the next generation... the PS3's limits won't be reached until we're onto the PS4. PS2, Xbox and Gamecube were never really pushed to the outer limits either.
Anyway, since the topic title says "What is the best looking game" and not "Which game pushes the PS3 to the limits", I will say MGS4 is a clear winner, with Uncharted a step behind and Ratchet another step behind.
right at the end there you were xbox bashing......"xbox 360 graphics chips calls for a more generic videogame look" i own a PS3 and xbox, and so far, The PS3 looks better....but not by much.....yet that is. And xbox isn't generic looking.uncharted used 40% of the PS3's "power" and had an engine built to work with the ps3's architecture specifically.
MGS4 is probably has cell working at 60-65%. no game even has ps2 working at 100% God of War 2 probably has it at 85%-90% kojima said hes got ps3 working a good sweat to promote his game

I dont think MGS4 pushes the ps3 to its limits...

thts right and all this stuff about kojima not being fully satasfied is bull**** according to him, he said in an interview (find it on kotaku) that the people who translated it all probably didnt learn japanese as a first language and are only able to translate, and due to the japanese dialect being so different, the context is also different
kojimas opinion, not mine
Thanks guys. I think its a tie between Metal gear solid 4 and grand theft auto iv imo. resident evil 5 also looks hot. Seigfried249
GTA 4?!?
How the hell can people possibly say GTA4?
I was sooooo disappointed when I popped it in and saw all the jaggies and found that they STILL have frame rate and texture pop issues... minor ones, but issues all the same.
GTA looks low-res and washed out. I like the art style and love the game, but the graphics are freakin awful.
