Thinking about buying a psp, but don't know much about them. Which is the best model, and how much to memory sticks cost these days? I want a pretty big one because I have a couple PS1 games bought off PSN which I can put on the stick, plus want the memory stick big enough to save game files for other games I may buy.

And how reliable is the PSP?

If you've got a ps3, the GO. Most portable and sports the best screen. If you ever get a psv, all your psp games won't be stuck on umd, and that disc driveis bound to break at some point in time.

I agree. I've got a few of them and the GO is the best of them all. It feels great in the hands, controls well and the screen looks fantastic. It comes with 16GB built in, which should keep you going for awhile.Obviously, only consider it if you're happy with digital downloads only.

The Go has horribly cramped controls and a limited library since not all games are available digitally. Go with a 2000 or 3000. Memory Sticks are very cheap now so it shouldn't be much of a concern.

If you can find one in good condition, 1000. Matt finish instead of the glossy, fingerprint-prone finish, and sports more metallic parts instead of plastic.

I agree. I love that model. The look, feel, and weight are perfect to me.

I bought the 2000 and didn't think much of it; ended up selling it off.

Still very happy with the 1000 to this day.

I feel the opposite. The placing of the analog on the GO is much better--less cramped. The stick itself is also better. ... I agree about the 1000--it has the best build quality.

I have a limited edition Final Fantasy VII edition which I'm very protective of. Nice to use. Nice to have something a little rare.

Out of the PSP models PSP 1000 Phat, PSP 2000 & PSP 3000, PSP Go, PSP 1000E.

The best overall is the PSP 2000 for the best screen. The PSP 3000 is second but had issues with scan lines.

Currently Sony markets PSP 3000 and PSP 1000E. The PSP Go has been discontinued.

IF you can get a PSP 2000 that is your best version.

No one can agree: so here's the rundown:

  • 1000:
    • Metal frame, making it the sturdiest and most reliable PSP
    • Also the heaviest
  • 2000:
    • Brighter screen
    • Better memory that allows for faster load times, like all future models
    • Video out (gameplay is possible through component, but not composite cables)
    • Lighter and slimmer
  • 3000:
    • Even brighter and more vibrant screen, but beware the scanlines!
    • Improved video out (gameplay through component or composite)
    • Even lighter than the 2000
  • GO:
    • No UMD drive, so digital is the only option, but many games aren't available PSN
    • 16GB of storage
    • Smaller form factor, but smaller controls might be harder to manage.
    • Smaller screen allows for higher pixel density
    • Game resume feature lets you use the XMB and return to your game where you left off.

If I missed anything, feel free to chime in.

Hmmm, thanks for this. I think the 2000 would be very nice to have. The GO is only download games, so thats a no go. 3000 has the scan lines, and seems less durable than the 2000. So 2000 would be the best model IMO.
