Voting is good, but posting to explain why you chose the game you chose is really what I'm looking for. ;)

I haven't gotten a racer yet this gen, and after doing a little research, I'm probably going to get Pure because I loved SSX Tricky, and since this game has a similar trick system, I'm on board!

Also, I like customization and trophies aren't a big deal for me, so I Pure over Burnout. I was also looking at Midnight Club: Los Angeles, but after reading the review, I decided against it because of the punishing difficulty. However, I'm still open to other opinions and I might change my mind.

Somthing that bothered me about most racers this gen is that most of them seem to have removed splitscreen play in favor of online multiplayer - I would rather have splitscreen over online multiplayer when it comes to racers, but I still think I would like Pure more than Motorstorm: Pacific Rift.

Again, I pretty much have my mind made up but I'm open to learn something new that might change my mind, and I still want to know what you guys think is the best racer out for the PS3 right now.

Pacific Rift all the way :D Motor carnage like you've never seen before! the game is just INSANELY addictive. The tracks, the online play, the variety of vehicle classes all make this the definitive racer for the holiday season in my opinion.

I was about to get Pure because I played the demo and it was brilliant, but then I found out its bad side. No motion sensing steering, no splitscreen and apparently having only one class of vehicle gets INCREDIBLY annoying, boring and repetitive so Im gonna pick up Motorstorm 2 in the next few weeks some time. It has all of Pure's features (apart from tricks) and the ones I mentioned earlier.

Burnout Paradise has a LOT to do, and is a ton of fun once you get into it. The amount of FREE downloadable content is pretty impressive. You can jump right from single player into the online mode while driving just by hitting the D-pad. At 30 bucks, there's no excuse not to have this game.

Grid was fun as hell while I played it but I guess it's a little dated with all these new racers coming out. Never played Motorstorm:PR so I wouldn't know about it. Apparently Midnight Club is real good, my friend is praising it left and right. And the new NFS just got scored a 4.0 at IGN so I'm a little skeptical about that one.. Oh and with all the new DLC coming out for Burnout Paradise it wouldn't be a bad idea to pick it up. I played the demo and loved it but never got around to buying it.

I have to say GRID is the best one to date. Motorstorm is okay, Pure is too much like Motorstorm meets SSX, and Burnout had a cheap feel to me.

I probably would get it if it had splitscreen play. Even though $30 is a pretty good price for it, I've never really been that much of a Burnout fan.

I know Pure doesn't have splitscreen either, but the trick system is more than enough to make up the difference in my opinon.

Thanks for your input though.

I'm surprised that Midnight Club isn't getting more love - I thought it was more popular than what the poll is showing right now. Anyway, I need someone to confirm the punishing difficulty that Gamespot claims it has.

Its because it is not the best racer. Not. Even. Close. MC:LA is very hard like you said and it sometimes gets to be a pain in the ass. Burnout Paradise is amazing and my favorite racer of all time. The new bikes and the time and day affects are awesome. They are even adding a whole new district to the already pretty large map. I just rented the new NFS so I am trying that out in a bit. Motorstorm 2 is awesome also and is what number 1 should have been. Pure definitely has the unique feel to it because of the tricks but they get repetitive after awhile. It is fun while it lasts though...(which is about 2-3 hours). I would pick all of those over MC:LA. But hey, thats just my opinion.

This got me thinking that there have been a lot of quality racing games on the PS3:

Motorstorm and Pacific Rift, Pure, GT5P, Grid, Burnout Paradise, Midnight Club: LA,  Dirt...I would have to say the Motorstorm P, GT5P, and Burnout Paradise have separated themselves from the others, depending on what you are looking for.

Were the tricks repetitive? Would you say it had a similar variety as SSX Tricky, or less?

Also, I don't care for motion sensing steering, and I'm not sure that Pacific Rift has enough variety of races to keep splitscreen from getting boring really quickly - the first one was pretty bare bones when it came to game modes and such.

Anyway, thanks for posting.

Did you play Midnight Club or are you just saying that from what you heard? I just want to know if this is your opinion from playing the game yourself, or if it's something you heard from a friend - sorry if I came of as rude.

If you did play it, did you try the online play, because that's where Gamespot said the game shines. If so, how was your experience with it?

Also, did you play SSX Tricky? Would you say the tricks in that game are repetitive? I loved SSX Tricky, and if Pure is similar in the trick system and variety, then I'll definitely get it - if not, then it would probably be a toss up between Midnight Club and Burnout.

Hmm ... I do love customizing cars - that's why the last racer I bought (not played, but purchased) was NFS: Underground. Time for a new one!

How is the difficulty for the campaign - is it uneven and punishingly difficult like Gamespot says, or is that a load of bull?

Burnout.

Free expansion thingies, huge worlds, great sense of speed.

If my wallet wasn't dying, I'd pick it up right now.

Actually, it's a load of bull, but only certain parts.

What they said in the review was that when you play, you've got Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red races; Green being easiest, and Red being hardest. This part is true.

But the other thing they said (I think, so correct me if I'm wrong) was that the red and orange races are extremely hard and punishing, which is true, but only if your car doesn't have the right stuff under the hood. (The performance upgrade system is similar to NFS:U in that there are 3 levels of performance for each part, so don't worry about it being complex if you don't know much about cars.)

If you're maintaing your car and you've got all the latest parts, then you should be fine, because when you do, the Red and Orange races usually turn to Yellow or Green races.

So really, the colors are there to tell you whether or not your CAR is ready to race with them, and not how hard it is.

But, like all Midnight Club games have been, you need to be a precision driver.

If you do race in an orange or red race, don't expect to get back into first place if you hit another car.

I think the whole "unbalanced and frustrating" arguement is coming from people new to the series, as any MC vet would know what to expect.

It's a pretty balanced game, it's just that people are trying to enter red races that are full of Lamborghinis and Skylines, with their stock 240.

Taken fromt he IGN review:

With Burnout Paradise having been out forever (and supported incredibly well by Criterion) and Midnight Club: Los Angeles having just shipped recently, the competition is very strong, leaving no reason whatsoever to choose Undercover over either of the aforementioned titles.

Oh, and this is the sole reason I've always preferred Midnight Club over Need for Speed:

When you take part in any standard race, the game closes off the streets so that you can only drive on the correct route. It's the game's way of putting you in a pre-defined track and not letting you veer from the beaten path.

Gran Turismo 5: Prologue because it has the best graphics of any game ever and it's the most realistic racer to date....if you just want a pick up and play fake racer with cars that steer like toys, than get an arcade racer like midnight club. If you want REAL racing get gran turismo

Wow, thanks for all of the info - but a couple more questions.

When you say "precision driver," do you mean that you have to memorize the tracks and the city? If not, then what do you mean? :P

Is the map hard to follow? - that was a big problem that GS had, and the map they show in the picture looks pretty crappy for directions.

I already mentioned that I dislike simulation racing, specifically Gran Turismo. :|

Besides, REAL racing is much more boring than arcade racing in videogames. ;)

Ahh, when I say 'precision driver,' I mean being able to weave in and out of traffic without clipping an Escalade and running into a semi on the highway; being able to slow down before a turn and then taking it sideways between two cars waiting for the light to turn green.

A lot of it is just having good reflexes.

And the map is NOT hard to follow. I'll be honest, it could have been a bit easier with a GPS marker like GTAIV had, but when you set a waypoint, you have to deal with an arrow that points you in the direction of where to go.

It's not an arrow at the top of the screen, though. There's an arrow around the mini-map that rotates around it and points you where you need to go. If you watch any gameplay videos and pay attention to the map, you'll see what I mean.

oh man, BURNOUT definitely wins this, EASILY! it's SOOO good!
it was an excellent racer to begin with, back in january. then, with soundtracks, extra races and motorcycles (all for FREE) PLUS trophies! this game is just TOO good... i got my Burnout license just recently and now i'm trying to go for that platinum trophy... i've got like 6 left to go! :-)

from what i played of the first, Motorstorm 2 definitely looks good too... i actually might get that soon? does anyone else know if it's worth it?

No problem.

Oh, and the arrow system is really similar to the NFS:U games, so I'm confident that you'll like this game.

Good luck with your decision making.

I agree with all of what Black says. MC: LA is the best racer out there IMO. It's really not incredibly hard, just difficult. It's tons of fun and i'm almost sure you'll enjoy it.

I only own one so all I can say is Burnout Paradise. Its a really good game. Played it for about a monthavataraang1

I'd have to go with this is as well. Burnout Paradise is simply very addicting and has a lengthy career mode. Not to mention, if you're a trophy junkie, you can easily get the platinum in this game. Just an extra incentive to keep playing. It's very rewarding and also has seamless online play.

[QUOTE="abdelmessih101"]I'm surprised that Midnight Club isn't getting more love - I thought it was more popular than what the poll is showing right now. Anyway, I need someone to confirm the punishing difficulty that Gamespot claims it has.abdelmessih101

I have all they games I mentioned there.

Midnight Club.

The vinyl system is so extensive that I was able to make a tribute to MGS4 with a Mitusbishi 3000gt.

Scianix-Black

Hmm ... I do love customizing cars - that's why the last racer I bought (not played, but purchased) was NFS: Underground. Time for a new one!

How is the difficulty for the campaign - is it uneven and punishingly difficult like Gamespot says, or is that a load of bull?

Man I get smoked on Yellow races and I keep my car up-to-date so to speak. Maybe I just sucked but I was amazing at MC:DUB Edition...

Oh yeah?

Huh... What do you drive?

Because I drive a Mitsubishi 3000gt most of the time and I can't really distinguish between yellow and green races :|

I dislike Gran Turismo greatly ... I even mentioned it earlier yet people still keep posting GT. :|

Scianix-Black

I know they're all great choices - that's why I put them in the survey. :P

But, as I'm not a big fan of racers, I usually only get/need one or two per console, so I'm just trying to figure out what's the right decision for me. I have a lot of quirks about gaming in general, and even moreso when it comes to the racing genre, so trust me, I can go wrong.

Anyway, I greatly appreciate all of the advice and opinions you've had to share and I know that now I have the information I need to make the right decision for me. Thanks agian for all your help especially, as well as everyone else that contributed a meaningful post. :)
