TC, do you mean FPS, TPS, SHMUPs, or something other like a TwinStick shooter? A little refining of the field, please?
:)
Dead Space - You shoot and dismember a nightmarish alien race.
Bioshock - You shoot genetically mutated denizens of the underwater dystopia Rapture.
Uncharted 2 - You shoot bad guys.
KillZone 2/3 if we are only going on shooting mechanics because I didn't think they were that great in UC2 (although UC is a better game overall). Vanquish was an alright game but I'm not sure why its held in such high regard really, maybe its just because its a breath of fresh air.

It doesnt have a multiplayer sucking the life out of it, the most polished game ive played this gen, so smooth and responsive.
funnest shooters.. i'd have to go with bioshock 1 and deus ex.
EDIT: the uncharted series was good for the story, although the gameplay itself sucked.
i liked that vanquish didn't have any mp to ruin it, *yea u heard correct* not everyone likes mp, i personally hate it cause it sucks the content out of the sp which is the only reason i buy a game.. but the gameplay in vanquish was repetetive and boring imo and i could never get into it.
kz2 was decent but the idea that it was all about mp just made the campaign seem pointless and the 3rd one was a joke..

YES! I loved "Vanquish" because it was pure.
"PURE".
:D
It seemed like a breath of fresh air because it had no MP clouding it. It is a harkening back to a simpler time in gaming, where it was you and the game designers...

^^^ THIS! omg this... i miss those days soooooo much, glad to see i'm not the only one who feels this way about gaming.None, because shooters are boring and generic. There's way too many of them and video game devs need to start doing something else instead of Call of Duty-izing their product and helping to ruin the video game industry in the process.

A well-trodden piece of critical ground, but what would you propose the industry do in place of a shooter? I'm not disagreeing with you in the least about the stagnation we've all been seeing in even our most loved genres especially in this current-gen, but what should they be making instead?
I think it's sad, too, that the industry judges success by Call of Duty terms as well, and anything not up to those numbers is somehow not a successful game, or a community which deserves games to be made in genres they enjoy? I was reading an interview about "the Death of Survival Horror as a genre" largely because there isn't an audience for it... So games like "Siren", "Silent Hill", 'Resident Evil", as well as smaller franchises and the play mechanics they all shared, are effectively extinct...
If you go on the Legacy Boards and ask questions about the older Survival Horror games, there's a metric pant-load of fans still out here who would love to see those games return...
... But because we're not 14million annual buyers who snarf up $15 map packs, or uniform & roster updates for FIFA or Madden, we don't somehow rate.

That's some bull****.
But what should the devs make, if they don't make a shooter from time to time, at least one that is as satisfying and sublimely brilliant to play like "Vanquish" is...?
:)
problem is all shooters, fps's anyway, are all essentially the same thing now, u get 2 choices, a short boring campaign or mindless repetetive online mp.. and fps games are practically all judged now based only on mp, a fps game can be the most awesome, coolest, best freakin game ever made and if it didn't have mp or the mp wasn't up to par with cod and bf it would still get rated a big fat 0... its sad how gamings gotten these days, u can't even unlock stuff anymore cause all the companies care about is making more money so any additional content is gonna be dlc.. its fvcked up man. :(

Ok, you've run circles around me, logically... I can't argue.
That's one game that truly does transcend all description to become it's own catagory... "BioShock" probably coming closest for pure break-away recently... Good answer.
