I have never paid any attention to them, I play games and stop playing when I am bored with said game. There is this guy where I work who is obsessed with certain trophies and will play until he gets a plat even though he clearly stopped enjoying the game ages ago.

So what the hell is the point? An artificial way to extend the lifetime of a game? A way to enlarge your e-penis? I really don't get it....

You've answered your own question. They don't serve any real purpose, but they're fun to try and get, just to show off for the most part.

I am like you, if i dont enjoy a game i will not force myself to play through the game just to get trophies, but for the game that i like i will try to get all of them. It just a fun way to try and hook players to finish the game.

I do them to be competitive with friends, total level doesn't matter to us neither does easy platinums. Its trying to Master a game with almost impossible platinums. My hardest are Killzone 2 Demon's soul

I'm not sure about this but I think I remember sony mentioning trophies featuring in home?

Still I think there should be something for getting a platinum such as an PSN avatar to show off your platinums.
Never got the levelling system but I'm sure there will be something in store for us in the future.

RE5 gives you character figures you can decorate your HOME space with. WKC plat gives you a wearable WK suit of armor for your HOME avatar.

I like trophies that require you to do something outside of the mission structure. i.e. gta's 10 rolls in a car.

Makes it worth striving for. Besides I like the trophy noise.

To me it makes games have more value and last longer. Adds a challenge and collecting them is fun on its own. Even though your playing a game that you lost interest in, its still fun to complete the challenge of getting that said trophy.

Leveling up the account and seeing what you yourself accomplished is what its all about. Its not so much bragging rights as its just personal achievement. I play easier trophy games for the trophies and i play the difficult ones for the great game and the super challenge of getting them. Games are less appealing to me when they do not have trophies as it seems your working towards nothing. Before trophies this was cool, but now that i can level up an account and see my progress from previous games, its the way i like it. I played Terminator Salvation and Hanna Montana both for easy trophies. The games were ok, but i enjoyed collecting the trophies more.

ok mushroomwig your turn...tell me how i'm wrong...

i dont concern myself with them. if i get one fine. if i dont, im not going to get mad and restart the game. i dont have a single plat and im comfy with my digital wang.

on a side note. if trophies could be transferred into points or dollars into your psn account... then id start goin back thru my games and be a collector.

What's the point of a real physical trophy? Nothing. It just sits there and looks pretty.

What's the point of a PS3 virtual trophy? Nothing. It just sits there and looks pretty. Online.

Trophies are double edge sword really. Some people just must have every single one (which could get unhealthy) while other don't like them at all.

I have to admit, am in the middle somewhere. I don't strive for Platinum's since some games are way, way to hard and time demanding to get such a achievement, while other games, such as Uncharted, are fun and enjoyable.

Trophies are after-all - an option to a certain degree. Don't get caught up into people's "trophy wars" mindset. That takes game enjoyment away, instead if you find a game you love and wish to test yourself with trophies it offers - collect them and have fun or don't. :)

I mean it serves exactly the same point as a real trophy. When people ask what's the point of trophies it just shows that they can't put 2 and 2 together and realize "Oh, maybe these PS3 'trophies' are kinda like trophies in real life! They show off what you've accomplished!" but apparently they're too busy trying to start a flame war to notice...

Ill do ones that are fun challenges like the inFamous stunt trophy for example where youre doing things like blowing 3 enemies off a roof at once.

Random collection ones though I wont kill myself doing.

The same can be said for quite a few online trophies too. xD when I finally get the trophy for 10,000 kills in Reisstance 2 I'm going to be so happy. :3

Trophies add replay value. Especially to single player games. I didn't feel I had to force myself for any of the games I've 100%. I also know when to quit on a game that you can't get without boosting (Bad Company 1). To try and get that one would probably not be fun because that game is a grind to get 10002 kills and a few of the awards seem like they require boosting with friends. It would be nice if you got some minor DLC or something when you platinum the game. Trophy don't really "mean" anything. But I always liked to 100% games I enjoy anyway. So the trophies are a nice way to "accumulate" the games you complete.

To a certain extent I agree ... but it's the players choice whether he wants to play for the experience and the fun, or just to get some virtual reward, or both. However, the fact that they exist doesn't directly ruin gaming as an art form.

I wouldn't say it "artificially" extends the life of a game. It does add real life to the game by challenging you to see everything the game has to offer.
Challenging you to see everythign a game has to offer isn't artificial.

trophies are for those that are interested in them. Personally, I think it is fun t compete with others to see who has to most trophies just like i did with my xbox live friends. It lengthens a games play time for some, ignored by some and hunted by others.

Well, when people who won't play it otherwise or use it as a sorry excuse to replay it completely missing everything that makes a game great. Pretty soon, they won't be able to tell the difference between a good game and $70 worth of crap. The line between actual fans of a franchise and mindless consumption because of an icon, will be blurred and also affect how games of the future will be made. "They won't tell the difference anyways, just pander to instant gradification and tell them how much of a good job they're doing" as if something was "earned". Games were never like this before and replay value meant either you really liked it individually, or the devs done a great job and effort into the game they made.

That's why I only pursue trophies/platinums for games I really love. If I have the platinum, then I actually had fun getting it. That's how I keep trophies from overcoming my appreciation for the actual games they're from.

replay value

challenges to explore etc

....at least that's what they mean to me.

I strive for a 100% completion of every game I own...whether it has trophies or not. I feel like my $65 is justified that way...heck, even when I was paying $40 last gen, I still went for 100% completion. I'm sure there are a lot of gamers out there like me. The only difference between previous gens and this gen is that Sony have made it possible to document your accomplishments.

While trophies are a fun addition to the gaming world..I have to admit that there are those people who take it to the extreme....

these people include, but are not limited to

  • braggers
  • people who destroy their social/work life to sit down and hunt these things all day
  • people who claim they're busy in real life, but the next time they log in, you can tell they've been gaming for days on end because their platinum count went up by six or seven lol
  • People who buy extremely crappy games because they are an easy way to raise their level count. etc, etc, etc.

Trophies are what you make them. They're fun....but when taken to the extreme, they create a group of people who are willing to lie, cheat, and lazy around doing nothing but hunting trophies.

There's a difference between recreational drinking and overindulging....that's how I feel about trophies. You have your average people who take a sip now and then...and then you have the village drunk lol

I don't really see any point to them. Not a fan of them actually. I think they ruin video games as an entertaining form of art.

To a certain extent I agree ... but it's the players choice whether he wants to play for the experience and the fun, or just to get some virtual reward, or both. However, the fact that they exist doesn't directly ruin gaming as an art form.

Hey, I think that I raced in Burnout Paradise with you once.
