Aside from JRPGs being made in Japan, what are the defining qualities that make an RPG classified as a JRPG. I mean, turn based combat ??? thats in the Heroes of Might and Magic games which are not Japanese.

Which is why there hasn't been a truly great JRPG in years.
They're all the same recycled bullcrap. (I haven't played the P series, though.)
I want a JRPG with the story-telling calibur of MGS. Kojima would be an absolute monster behind an RPG.

yeah true, but even if they change the notion, i wish they keep the hot chicksThe main thing ive noticed that separates JRPGs from WRPGs isnt turn based combat (as a lot of JRPGs have active combat), its the party system; in just about every JRPG(Crisis Core being an exception), u have a party of characters at hand (while not always playable), likewise, just about every WRPG (Mass Effect is the only exception i know) has you exploring the world mostly solo. This is also the reason why Mass Effect is the only WRPG I like; being alone is boring to me.Aside from JRPGs being made in Japan, what are the defining qualities that make an RPG classified as a JRPG. Oh...I'd love to see Kojima try his hand at an RPG. I'm hoping for White Knight Chronicles to be the JRPG we've been waiting for though.[QUOTE="Scianix-Black"][QUOTE="funsohng"]spikey hair main character. save-the-world plot. hot chicks.king23_

I mean, I'm not one to trust in other's opinons whole-heartedly, it's just that they say the game is a lot of grinding and the quests you do are pretty similar in nature. I don't know, after hearing what I've heard there about the game, I'm going to be careful not to hype WKC up too much for fear of letting myself down.

lol... If nancy doesn't like it nancy doesn't have to play it ! :P personally i like the typical JRPG.. maybe because i play them alot more for the story than i do for the gameplay though...[QUOTE="funsohng"]spikey hair main character. save-the-world plot. hot chicks.KH-mixerX

This is why people see JRPG's to be so dumb. Nothing personal but I mean really, the whole saving the world plot may seem extremely cliche but it's really about how it's told. Though you did mention MGS so maybe you want something like that? There are some truly good JRPG's out there in my opinion, all in the PS2 though. (SMT is my personal favorite, and it's a real beast IMO)
Well written story, care and love for characters (sometimes quite a few of them), music, I'm a big fan of Turn-Based JRPG's (FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, FFX), Dragon Quest Series, of course Kingdom Hearts is action based and so forth.
Persona series is something I'm having tons of fun with. Again, great atmosphere, interesting characters, great dialog, comedy, story and outstanding relaxing music.
Quite a few JRPG's have mini games that usually give great rewards.
There definitely exist major differences between JRPG and WRPG's but the main reason I have to stress on is: Story, Characters, Music, Gameplay.

I agree with you about most of them being recycled. I would also urge you to check out the Persona series. The mix up the format quite well.spikey hair main character. save-the-world plot. hot chicks.funsohng
Those aren't chicks. Those are dudes that LOOK like hot chicks, which is a hallmark of Japanese games (and anime, for that matter).
well, most people already mentioned the stereotypical characteristis of a JRPG... there isn't much left to add. and, taking all of the things mentioned into account, illustrates why the JRPG genre hasn't delivered in a while. It's almost like the Japanese game devs and culture still share the same meaning of "cool" as they used to in the past. I know that's over-generalizing, but that aspect in their culture hasn't evolved... and don't get me wrong, even with all of those chliche elements in play, the game can come off outstanding - if the pieces fall into place with strong character qualities and at least some originality in the story -, but for the most part the genre has been cheesy from top to bottom, and, let's be real here, how many of you want to see another teenange boy save the world?... if i would have any suggestions to the devs 1.) please, enough with the over-the -top, cheesy, power-ranger style dilouge (IN ALL OF YOUR GAMES, not just rpgs) 2.) make main characters more established and mature; i like some silliness as much as anyone else who appreciates the genre, but enough with these damn kids.Rakuho
Oh man, I agree with this right here. I hear some JRPGs are good but I still won't get it because it just isn't my style anymore. One example is Eternal Sonata. I hear its great but when I played the demo I swear I was gonna vomit - the voice acting, colors, enemies, and wardrobes just struck a very bad chord. On the otherhand I really enjoyed Valkyria Chronicles, it was able to be artistic and colorful but at the same time not childish and much more mature.
White Knight Chronicle I will get for sure though because Level-5 has made games that I consider to be top-tier. And they are willing to try new things in their videogames. So even though they may be trying new things in WKC I know that they will put their own spin on it.

Well look at Wizardry 8 and Might and Magic 5,6,7 (not the heroes of might and magic, but rather plan old might and magic), they are NOT JRPGs, they are WRPGs that have the party system too.[QUOTE="multiplat"]

Gender confused characters that don't know how wear matching outfits wielding swords big enough to make even Mr. Governator wimper in fear. That my friend = WIN8)
the only real defining feature is that they are made in japan. however, rpg's made in japan tend to have stylistic similarities. thats not to say that these characteristics make an rpg japanese, they are just common among the genre.
they tend to be more linear, with an emphasis on a strong narrative rather than customization.
the art style is usually manga inspired, even if the tone of the games are different.
grinding. like it or not, grinding is a common activity.
god-like final bosses appear frequently. though christianity is making a splash in asian religions, most japanese dont see gods (god may even be a bad way to describe. they are often spirits orlocal deities)as perfect, infallible, omnipotent beings. they are just really strong beings.
youll also obviously see a japanese sense of humor in the comedic relief scenes, simply because the devs are japanese. localisation teams do their best, but you cant change a whole scenerio if thats what the joke relies on.
Narrative, interesting characters and relationships between, parties of characters, linear (almost) game world, anime-based art style, etc.
Actually, P4 is a perfect game!
