yea, to get the most out of 4's story, you'd prolly want to play all of them (PO i don't think is that necessary unless you care bout Big Boss). Or you could just read the game scripts or plot analyses that abound on the internet

i have the same problem since i havent played 1-2. my friend told me to just play MGS1 (since that is how everyone got introduced to the basic foundation of the storyline)... and wikipedia the stories of MGS2 and 3.

I think the games that started with solid snake are important to play to understand MGS4. MGS3 and MGSPO are just about Big Boss. but i'd say that the most important out of the entire series has to be MGS1 because in the new MGS4 trailer, everyone dies of FOXDIE. and in MGS1, you will understand the story behind FOXDIE. Also, most of the characters you see in the new trailer are from MGS1. like Meryl,Roy Campbell, Naomi Hunter, and Otacon. in conclusion of this comment, i would say you should get MGS1. But, i think you would just need to play all the games (including the ones for the NES) because there all important. but i think MGS1 is the most important out of all of them. :D

MGS2, but MGS1 was very good game and really made the series popular. At that time it was one of the best looking games, even though the characters almost had no faces but pixels as theireyes and mouth lol. MGS2 refers back to MGS at times it gives you some tidbits of the past and kinda maybe the future of what you will expect in MGS4 like the unanswered questions in MGS2 will be answered in MGS4 espcially #4's title. Overall I think you should play MGS1 and MGS2, you don't really need to play MGS3.

MGS1 and 2. MGS3 is a prequel so its not that important. MGS4 is a follow up to MGS 2.

Don't buy them all now, because it has been stated that konami will release a "bundle pack" with all the earlier games in one Blu-ray disc and after that buy the MGS: portable+ (PSP).

Oh I was wonderin almost about the same except for one particular title... that is MGS 3. Does it contain a lot of important stuff for the plot? I loved MGS 1 and 2 but I never got into the third one. Probably because I saw no walls to hide behind and I felt a bit too lazy to really get into the game but I'm all pumped up for MGS 4 so I might just push myself to learn it.

Anyway is the plot for MGS 3 important? I heard they gave more info about the patriots or something but do you think it's important stuff?

Sure. http://www.pspcrazy.com/index.php?page=Story&id=1960

edit: don't know if this is coming to Europe/N.A but it should as the larger audience of MGS is based on this two regions.

edit 2: another site http://www.konami.jp/gs/game/mg20th/

The way I would play them is start with 3, since as far as the games cronology is concerned this one is first, then 1, and then 2. If you have a PSP, Metal Gear Solid: Portable ops is technically before MGS 3, but if you want to understand the story up to 4, the best order is 3, 1, 2. Either way, prepare to make friends with your couch regardless.

Have fun :)

MGS 3 fills in what happend before the Foxhound unit was organized, and there are references to it in MGS 1 and 2, so I would check it out if you want to know everything up to the ending of MGS 2.

I don't think so, the MGS1 on GBA is not really MGS it's Metal Gear (without Solid) thus is not the same. Afaik that the GBA game(s?) are events before MGS1.

PS: Thanks for the people that answered my question regarding MGS3, I'll guess I'll be busy for the next few days :)

wow....i don't care if I do have all of the games I am getting that. I hope it has portable ops or at least something to tell me the story...thats a lot of CDs so I'm guessing there is tons of extras...also anyone can slap a game on a blu-ray disk so there must be something special.
