Not quite sure as what you mean by compress, but if its making mp3s and ripping CDs I have relied on this program for years:

Some people call me crazy for using the same program for so long. But the programmer is always working on it and it allows for some real nit picky customization in making your mp3s. If you had a large bitrate mp3 you can use this program to remap it into a smaller bitrate is if that is what you needed.
