A $100 price drop is not going to save the PS3, especially since Microsoft can easily match.   Sony needs to do something more drastic.  Here is what I recommend:

1.  Drop Blu-Ray as a requirement and sell a DVD/20GB version of the console @ $299 for Christmas.

2.  Re-release all games that are worth re-releasing on DVD on a 'budget' line of games.

3.  Promise to not release any games on Blu-Ray (so people feel safe buying the DVD PS3).

4.  Buy or produce a exclusive (even timed) for Christmas '07 that will make the PS3 worth owning

5.  Do all this without looking like they are in a panic.

If Sony absolutely HAD to sell consoles TODAY, I would say you are right. But they don't just want to sell consoles today, they want to sell them tommorrow, and next year, the year after that, and eight more years after that. That means that a good strategic move is to build a console that has the power and capacity to accept games as developers make them more technologically advanced. We already see this with MGS4. Kojima NEEDS the PS3 to bring his baby to the public. It's not t hat he WON'T make it for Xbox, it's that he CAN'T. More HDTV's are being sold every day. They started slow but they are catching on fast. Blu-ray will respond in kind. Sony is losing exclusives. But they never really HAD those exclusives. That is to say, they never had any kind of contractual agreement with a 3rd party to make games exclusively for Playstation. The developers committed to the Playstation because they felt it was a better system with more mass appeal. And you have YET to read a single thing about a game BECOMING an Xbox exclusive after it was originally billed as a multi-platform or Sony Exclusive. I read today that Sony had sold 2 million PS3's by January 5th (its in the april PSM magazine). That means that in about 6-7 weeks they sold 2 million freakin' consoles! The 360 has been out for about a year and a half and has sold 10 million. That means that it takes the Xbox 1.8 months (54 days) to sell 1 million consoles. Sony took 45 days to sell 2 million. Sony will be fine just the way they are

A price drop is all that’s needed. If the console comes in at around £349.99 within the next 6months Sony will move more PS3 then Microsoft could ever do...

Here is an excerpt from Sony's gaming division's executive meeting minutes....... 8:00 am: Meeting comes to order 8:01 am: The plethora of Microsoft Fanboys and misinformed knuckleheads appearing on gamesite forums is discussed. It is resolved that none of these people really know what its like to be a multi-billion dollar company competing in a $7 billion dollar a year world-wide industry. 8:30 am: It was resolved by teh board that none of these people (that guy with the FF1 Fighter Avatar especially) should be taken at all seriously. 9:00 am: The board reviewed the sales data and realized that their system was selling faster than the competition and would reach the same sales figures as Microsoft in a much shorter period of time. 10:00am: The issue of exclusives was discussed, most recently Devil May Cry. One board member asked "Don't we pay them to make games just for us?" to which the chairman replied "No". Another board member asked "Do they have any contractual obligation, explicit or implied, with them?" To which the chairman also replied "no". Another executive then asked "Well then why didn't they make games for the other console last generation?" The chairman replied "Because it sucked and no one bought it" 11:00am: Meeting adjourned

they will never drop blu ray so think of a different idea. And yes $100 price drop will help, even if the 360 does match it, all other thign swill coem with time, like exclusives and better games

That's just not true...... XBOX 360 sold 228,000 consoles last month.......PS3 sold 127,000.......that's nearly twice as many XBOX's. Compare that to last year when the 360 would still sell out the moment it got the store (and it sold 160,000).

Why does blu-ray matter? It will do nothing to make games better and very few people have any real interest in a blu-ray player. The only thing it does is turn PS3 purchasers into 'wait and seers' and eventually into Wii / 360 owners. All those PS3's sitting on the shelf? They are there cause the console is too expensive.

Maybe you're right, Maybe Blu-ray doesn't matter. Maybe developers won't care about that extra 50GB of potential gaming awesomeness on each disc. Maybe all those people who are buying HD TV's (which by the way is EXPLODING) won't care about watching movies with inferior picture quality. $5000 for a TV is no big deal, there is no reason to expect anything better. You're completely crazy dude.

I don't know for sure about PS3 selling more than 2 million already (I'm not doubting the guy who said that-HILARIOUS post by the way-I just haven't seen it) but the news about 360 making it to 10 million just happened came like at the end of last year. IF PS3 has passed 2 million, they are moving more. Oh and Blu-Ray matters because everyone will have an HDTV soon and they'll want their games to look better than last-gen games. There's also the assload of extra space. You don't have to "wait and see". I have an SDTV and I almost cried the first time I watched my friend down the hall play Resistance on his 720p monitor.

Well, keep waiting for the amazing use of that extra storage space......I'm sure it was worth $200. It's not worth arguing....just know that I can guarantee you that no game released this generation will REQUIRE the extra space. Use, definitely, but not require and definitely not justify a $200 price increase. If they wanted to make gaming $200 better they should have added that much more system memory.....THAT would have made a difference.

I love HDTV.....I'm on my second. Yet, I have zero interest in HD/Blu-Ray. DVD's look great. My cable signal looks great. I have money and am a techy and don't care......so I'm sure the mainstream user could care even less.

I also know that downloads are going to kill the disk formats within 5 years. Most people obviously agree with me, cause almost no one is interested in these formats. They aren't selling. Sony is basically crucifying the Playstation brand to sell it.

The entire PC industry is waiting on baited breath for Blueray to come full force.

You yourself will own one in your next computer purchase.   It will probably be a 50GB Blu-ray Recordable drive.

You WILL have one so stop pissing in the water you will be drinking from.

We've needed another optical medium 5 BLOODY years ago.

Tell me, how often do you backup your 200 GB hard disk to DVD right now?  Every day?

Do you really burn 20 DVD's?

Another thing about these "Screw the PS3 network downloading will RULE ALL" people.

Look... Unless we have reliable hard disk computer systems that won't lose data... It simply won't work.

Most people aren't properly backing up their data already. If I lightning bolted your house and blew up your hard disks I bet you and similarly 99% of the people in the world would lose all their data irrecovably. Optical backup is probably the only realistic solution.

Network downloading has a bright future but it simply won't replace anything anytime soon.

By the way, the PS3 is the only networked console with GIGABYTE ethernet. So when the Wii and 360 are crawling at 100 speeds the PS3 will be cruising at 1000.

For those of you comparing PS3 with the PS2 vs Dreamcast, consider this, do you honestly see developers and gamers dropping the Xbox 360 in droves and jumping on the PS3? NO you don't see that. This time it's a lot differnece. MS is a far more powerful opponent than Sega was and the main reason PS2 destroyed the Dreamcast is simply because Sega sucks.

Sega almost ONLY had exclusives when the Dreamcast launched. The only game that I can think of off the top of my head that was also available on PS2 is Grandia 2. The Sega sports games that became the 2K Sports games, which are the highest-rated sports franchises in existence were exclusive to the Dreamcast for years. It had Shenmue. It had online gameplay, a download service in the works, and it's own internet service provider. It had one of the few games in existence to get almost unanimous perfect scores in Soul Calibur. The DC could do a lot more than the PS2 could, it was cheaper, and it had a pretty large install base. The games looked MUCH better than the PS2 launch games. And the funny part is that I didn't even think about comparisons between the 360 vs. PS3 debate and the DC vs. PS2 debate until just now. Dreamcast had a LOT more going for it than 360 does currently if we're going to compare competitions.
