Exactly, I mean exactly, the same situation I had. I didn't do anything creative with mine. I'm just amazed by the exact same scenario lol :)

Remove the hard drive and sell it on E-bay. There are plenty of people in the market for 60 GB models for the backwards compatibility and are willing to fix up old non-functioning ones.

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure there's no data stored that isn't stored on the hard drive.

i have been told there is becuase the xmb is not on the HDD so with account info and stuff being on the XMB that can be an issue, now once the PSN comes back on i guess it wont matter too much becuase i will change my password and such right? as long as they cannot access it I should be ok right most people would just delete the info right?

That info is on the XMB because the console stores that info on the HDD, then reads that info from the HDD and displays it on the XMB.

my old 40 gig is still sitting in my closet. It actually still sort of works. It wont read discs but you can still turn it on and, i guess, play PSN downloads off of it but really it is trash. An expensive piece of trash because i remember buying it when PS3s were like 500 bucks.

no far from warranty it was a launch ps3 i was going to go through sony and i was all set up and had a code and everything ready but i backed out because i misread the time it would take thinking 7 weeks and then opened it. when i cancelled the order i tried to go back later and when i put in my SN it said basically not found and i could not seem to do it again
