I think Sony should have dropped the price of the 60 GB model and left it at that and mayb bundled it with motorstorm. Cuz with the release of the 80GB who would want the 60 GB any more??
Either way Sony FTW!!!

What features does the 80 GB model have over the 60 besides 20 GBs more memory? kniveshurt18
that's the only difference between the systems, but the 80GB PS3 will come bundled with MotorStorm for $599.
i already got the 60 GB around christmas, so im not buying another ps3 jsut for 20GB more lol :P
i would just upgrade mine with a new HDD
The question who would want the 80gb model, when you can buy the 60gb and use the 100$ to upgrade your HDD.Krigon
How will u upgrade ur HDD?? Anyways, u still be paying like 700 in total w/ the PS3 and the upgrade.
I'm thinking of selling my PS3 (60GB) for the PS3 (80GB)

you can upgrade your HDD by buying a larger one.
also, I hate to be harsh, but that would be a stupid idea to sell your PS3 just for the 80GB. You will not get anywhere close to retail for your PS3.

It's in the manual, you can upgrade your Hard-drive very easily and cheaply. It's useless to buy the 80 GB model unless you want Motorstorm and don't have a PS3.
Here's a nice youtube video showing you how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkM9wiZePfs
Except for IGN none of the gaming press made notice that you can upgrade your PS3 hard-drive easily and cheaply with off-the shelf parts.

Yea, thats kinda silly. Since for the 100$ you could buy a much larger HD then the 20GB difference.
Search on google about upgrading it. You basically just unscrew the ps3 at the back and slot it in. Something like that. Its supposed to be really easy. Check your ps3 instruction manual.
The whole point of the new ps3 is just so sony can appeal further to more people :). It also doesnt piss off too many sony fans because they can still upgrade =)

You can even use External HDD if you are afraid of damaging the ps3 by opening it.
The reason Sony released the 80gb was because they needed a price drop, but couldn't afford to do so.
Basically, all Sony think about are three things: Profitability, Sales and Marketshare (each three support and help out each other), and in that order.
At $600 Sony seem to be getting around 85k a month in sales in the US, this does not return a profit, and it looses them marketshare.
If Sony drop the price of the PS3 by $100 it will allowthe PS3 to be actractive to around 20k morecustomersa month - still not great numbers, but it's definatly an improvement.
However, what Sony has learnt it that they can still manage to sell around 85k consoles a month at the $600 mark, and attract an extra 20k a month at the $500 mark.
This may suprise you but it is probably cheaper for Sony to manufacture the 80gb model than it is for Sony to manufacture the 60gb model. The 80gb models lacks to EE chips that the 60gb model has. Not only that, but 80gb HDDs are more mass produced than 60gb models - meaning that they can get better deals on the 80gb HDD than the 60gb HDD.
Also, Sony would have also turnt a profit on Motorstorm by now, so when bundling the game they are only having to pay for manufacture of the disc, case and manual - which is probably in the pennies.
Yet the consumer thinks that they are getting a better deal (which they actually are) and more willing to drop the cash. Matter of fact is that Sony will be loosing much less money on the 80gb model at $600 than they currently do with the 60gb at $600.
What Sony hope is that the packed-in game and witheverybody wanting to beat the Joanses the majority of buyers will purchase the 80gb model over the 60gb model for $100 more.
Basically in short Sony need to drop the price of the console but can't afford to have it lower than $600, and that is what the 80gb model is for.
I think what they should do now is, Price Cut by about $60 - Release the 80GB worldwide, Discontinue the 60GB - Because the idiots are losing money!Dante865
Actually Sony is MAKING money on the PS3....at least according to Bloomberg. But hey, what do they know about business

Sammyboy2005
just so you know, for the past couple of months, Sony has been making a profit on the hardware. it was reported by Bloomberg today.
Is that in all regions? Because the console is much cheaper in Japan (it's around $400 there) and other Asain countries. Aswell as a lot of European and African countries.Sammyboy2005
Japan will not receive a price cut. Europe will be getting an announcement during E3.

That's not what I meant, I meant that in Japan the PS3 already costs $400 for the console, are Sony turning a profit there?
And I'm not too sure on Bloomberg, are they similar to the NPD (I'm from the UK, btw).
^^^^niice, so above all there only difference is a 20gb more....it'll still have wi-fi and hdmi ports....nice i had a ps3 60gb so rather gettin it again, i'll just get an 80gb it seems more sufficientHoVDaHuSTLa1
yes, the 80GB will include everything that the 60GB has. nothing more, nothing less(except for the HDD space difference).
if you already have a 60GB PS3, it would be utterly and completely stupid to sell it and buy an 80GB PS3.

Do not know if they are turning a profit in Japan. I would say not with the price being so low.
As for Bloomberg, they are one of the top financial companies in the world.

Well, they're only selling 10k a week in Japan anyways.
Yeah, I heard of Bloomberg, I just assumed they were an American news corporation.
The 80gb is a brilliant move by Sony
Sony's production cost difference between the 60gb version and 80gb version is probably less than 10 dollars, but people who want the top of the line will pay 100$ for the difference. By packaging Motorstorm with it (Essentially at no cost to Sony, since this game is probably about to become the PS3's first "GREATEST HITS!" type game) they are softening the blow to those people who MUST own the version with the biggest HD.
And if must have games come out, and PS3's start becoming scarce, expect the 60GB versions to dry up quickly, forcing people to buy the 80GB while still making them feel like it's not THAT bad a deal.

it doesn't matter how many they are selling. to be profittable, the selling price needs to be higher than the manufacturing price. it doesn't matter if they sell 1 unit a month, if they are making the PS3 for less than $400, then it is profittable.

whatever...the 60gb that i have now is sufficient enough. it's just going to continue like this, 80gb, 120gb, 200gb. and people will fuss about it.
i'll just continue to yawn.
Wait, I have one question if I upgrade my 60gig HDD to something more than 100...
So, I have a lot of stuff on my drive (demos, music, pictures, game saves). Will I end up losing it all if I upgrade to a bigger hard drive, or can I transfer my things. Thanks...

as long as the HDD size is the only difference, what's the big deal?

there should be no big deal about it.

a good deal if u want motorstorm and some extra memory

poopstain897456
it's not memory...it's hard drive space.
This is the first "premium" version taht I can recall being a much, much worse deal. Who in their right mind would pay $100 more for 20 GB of Harddrive space and a game when you can get 120 GB for less, and the game will go down in price eventually. Also, the 80 GB model doesn't come with the EE chip, so BC rates will go down.sfenty
do you think everybody in the world can replace the HDD? no. some people just don't feel comfortable doing that. what about those parents buying it for their kids? do you think a 12 year old could do it?
and the BC rate doesn't go down that much with the software emulation. Sony is world's beyond another console maker's attempt at BC.
