It won't really matter. Not many people are buying the PS3 for the Blu-ray player. It's really just another plus when people decide to buy a PS3, not the main reason for buying the PS3.
So, if Blu-ray fails, which it probably won't, it doesn't matter.
the PS3 will lose its potential boost in sales as being sold as a next-gen movie player (which is something that the 360 and Wii cannot do anways)...
and the future of the PS3 will be dependent on the quality of its game sales (which is the same for the 360 and Wii). so as long as Sony is confident in their gaming library, then everything will be fine.
the end of ps3?kingtahktahkhuk
nothing would happen in the gaming side of things. Developers enoy the extra space that blue-ray gives them compared to dvds. It could hurt them in the moive war, but the fact that so many compaines are going the blue-ray route makes it unlikely it will fail. It could but it wouldn't make a difference to the gamer.
Gamers Game....Fanboys Pick sides.......
Blu-ray has already won evidenced by the fact that HD-DUD has had to resort to paying out $150 million dollars to stay on life support with Paramount. Blu-ray is the complete solution for movies, gaming, and data storage, end of story.swordfish_64
not a life time, its only 18 months
I see Blu-Ray as being a replacement of the DVD in possibly a year or two in more than just games and movies, because there are information data bases that is used in many auto repair shops that had to stop using DVD's several years ago because of the lack of space that was needed (about four years ago it would take about 25 or 30 DVD's to hold this information). Now this information was updated about every three months, so with just this kind of program a Blu-Ray would be a god send.
Actually, Blu-Ray is beating HD-DVD. Blockbuster said that they will be getting rid of HD-DVD in favor of stocking Blu-Ray exclusively. I read this in the USA Today, I think.
It will hurt their movie sales but wont affect PS3 sales. Don;t forget Blu-Ray is a consortium just like the Cell. Out of all companies part of the consortium Sony is the one likely to get most sales simply because of the product it offers being a console as opposed to standalone players or Cell servers.
Will they go HD-DVD for PS4? Possibly, at the risk of alienating some of those partners they worked with and a great PR blow to them. I still hold the opinion that Blu-Ray will become the dominany one once standards are evolved and they include some of the missing features in their movies (Java etc etc...)
i personally think if they lose then its going to hugely impact the ps3. it will lose one of its biggest selling point and alot of momentum. and since ps3 doesnt have a strong game library to back it up i wouldnt be surprised that it will end the playstation as we know itkingtahktahkhuk
Blu Ray is only a selling point because its manufacturing cost is pretty much why the PS3 is so expensive, and that currently the PS3's gaming library is not the greatest right now.
once the price of the PS3 hits the level of the 360 (which it will soon, especially if they introduce the 40GB SKU) and when the PS3 library matures and gets more killer apps... the Blu Ray player will be, at the very least, a nice bonus to have... if not another huge factor in why people should buy a PS3.

A little optimistic don't you think? Even if they introduce a new SKU, it will be as expensive as the best SKU Microsoft has to offer, assuming Microsoft doesnt drop the price in retalitation. You are also ignoring the fact that the 360 will also mature and get more killer apps. Sony is riding on the PS3 being an entertainment hub, if the public goes HD-DVD the future is bleak for Sony, they would have lost massive amounts of money.
you people are all forgetting, blu-ray is backed by sony, one of the largest electronics company in the modern world. Sony now is like the medusa, where if a branch of it fails, a new branch can take in and cover the slack. We forget that they make tv's, playstation, computers, have a record company, the list goes on and on. so basically, since blu-ray is backed by this monstrosity of a company(in a good way), it will never fail.ballasteve
Sony's Net Income in 2007 is $842 million
Microsoft's Net Income in 2007 is $14.06 billion
There is a limit to how much slack you can take when you are going against Microsoft.
Universal will be going with Blu-Ray pretty soon and when that happens HD-DVD will have what? Paramount. Well Paramount did the stupid thing to sell over to HD-DVD and everyone knows it (Including the Paramount employee's).
Yes we all know Transformers the movies was great, but really was it great enough to decide the factor in which format will win? Besides ease your mind WB is getting Robotech which is going to be Blu-Ray exclusive.

it is a bit optimistic that Sony will beat MS... but i think its fair to say that Sony can atleast survive this console war even if Blu Ray loses.
MS has already announced their holiday price cuts... so i doubt that they will cut their prices even again if Sony introduces the 40 GB SKU for $400.
lets not forget that MS is basically only selling in two major territories (EU and US), with its Japan sales still bleak. the PS3 is selling in both Europe and the US as well, with them also having a viable market in Japan (or atleast, as much of a market as Nintendo deems to give them in Japan).
lastly, this isn't Sony's first time selling a console as a computer. they tried to do the same thing with the PS2 when it came out in 2001, which they quickly stopped once they had exclusive games to sell the console just as a game machine.
the only thing that the PS3 is missing is a group of extremely high quality of games. with out without Blu Ray, games is what will make or break the PS3.
if br fails...Im having a party out in the country and you're all invited to come and bring your ps3s so we can make a huge bonfire out of them and have an all night long cookout!!
but seriously though... i have bigger things to worry about than "what if br fails."
which i doubt it will.
Don't want to be a wet blanket here.. But here is some news regarding the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray war... Things do not bode well...
This is what caused paramount to bail the Blu-Ray camp:

In a nutshell, whole china will be supporting CH-DVD which has similiar architechure as HD-DVD. Meaning cheap ass HD-DVD players and manufacturing cost for HD-DVDs.
