I ordered a 500 GB hard drive off of amazon, and it should be arriving tomorrow. I have started to format my 500GB external HDD to fat32 so I can backup my data, but I was wondering, what will I lose?

I'm talking, will I lose all my PSN games (Will I be forced to redownload or will I face the risk of complete loss?). Saved game installs like DC Universe I just spent 4 hours downloading a few days ago which forced me to get this thing? Will I lose saves for certain games like Demon's Souls, Killzone, ModNation or anything?

I want exact specifics because I want to know for sure what I'll be losing if anything, thanks!

Are you 100% positive? It'll transfer my PSN games, and installed games as long as its the same PS3?

you will not lose anything as long as you restore it on the same ps3

if you restore on different ps3 locked game saves will not copy over

found that out when my fat ps3 broke and i restored on a slim

Yes I did it when I put in a new HDD and not a single problem.

Alrighty, I'm gunna bampu this thread real fast. Its backing up as I post, but I desperately need sleep before class in 4 hours.

Could someone tell me if the backup times are the same, slower, or faster than the restore times? Its a time management thing. I am going to come home and install the hdd then go back for one more hour in the afternoon, so I want to know if I can hop on right when I get home or if its going to be another 2 or 3 hours (backup will take around 3 it looks like, over 100 GB.).

Not sure about the backup, but I asume that these might be close to times. I did the data transfer to a new slim over the weekend and 44 GB of data took me 1hr 34min.

You will lose everything if you transfer your stuff on a new ps3, except your saved game data/music/video/pictures. I did a back up on an external HDD of my old 60GB, it had 17 psn games, couple of game data and it didn'T transfer to my new slim ps3. I even lost some saved game data like Killzone 2 who were protected.

Did you deactivate your system, before you did the transfer?

As for the technical aspect of it I do not really know, however in part of the transfer process they tell you that if you have PSN games/data that you must deactivate your system before you do the transfer. I had PSN games on my system, did the transfer with the deactivation and everything transferred over fine.
