Many developers find that the costs of developing on Sony's platform can outweigh many of the benefits. Sony's royalty on each disc sold is twice the royalty Microsoft levies on their system. Additionally, each extra month of development that the platform requires can raise the break-even point by as many as 50,000 and 80,000 units on big titles.

Jack Tretton head of Sony Computer Entertainment America revealed earlier this summer that Sony had a strict policy against "buying" exclusives. "We have a very different approach to exclusives than some of our competitors," stated Tretton. "We don't buy exclusivity, we don't fund development. We don't, for lack of a better term, bribe somebody to only do a game on our platform."

The thing is if Sony doesn't buy game exclusives then the only way Sony is going to sell consoles is make better mulitplatform games, but if the development costs and time consumed to make the game outweigh it's benefits then the future for the PS3 isn't looking good because exclusive games are what consumers looking for:

- Halo 3 [Xbox 360]

- Gears of War [Xbox 360]

- Bioshock [Xbox 360]

- MGS4 [PS3]

- GTA IV [PS3 and Xbox 360]

- Grand Turismo 5 [PS3]

My question is what is Sony's plan to improve the PS3 sales? Where

1: Sales of the PS3 is behind the Xbox 360 and the Wii.

2: Game development will cost more on the PS3.

3: Sony doesn't want to buy exclusives

Well the $400 40 GB PS3 is a start. Starting this month I see a bunch of good games being released each month for the foreseeable future. Maybe nothing AAA caliber, but anything is possible.

This seems to be their plan

  1. Drop the price in Europe and bring back a more affordable sku once again
  2. Buy studios and bolster their 1st party
  3. Make deals with third parties to get games and pick up games to publish.
  4. Provide third parties with better tools and more knowledge to help them get the most out of their ps3 games
  5. Improve online features and get more content
  6. Provide unique experiences only avaible on ps3
  7. Keep supporting the ps2 with casuals games at least and continue production. Gain even more fans in the next couple of years if possible to help ensure future success.

This is probably what people would like them to do

  1. Throw millions of dollars at Square and Konami to keep MGS4 and FFXIII exclusive
  2. Throw millions at Rockstar for DLC for GTA IV content
  3. Throw millions atthe top third party studioslike Epic , Rockstar , Bioware , and Capcom to make new AAA titles
  4. Drop price , drop price , drop price , and keep dropping price every month
  5. Copy xbox live (but keep it free)

I agree with you 100% but people probably won't like the answer you gave though...

price drops will help alot. I was at walmart 2 times this week and saw 15 units sold of the 80gb version at 549cdn. When people see deals they will buy them. And as a spinoff now these people will start buying games.

I don't think Sony is doing as bad as some would like to think even with the current price and the smaller game library it's really doing great.

And with the PS2 sales holding like they are it just helps the whole gaming devision in the Sony camp.

The PSP is selling very well now and once people learn how the remote play works with there PS3 it could boost the sales of both systems.

The PS3 is doing fine. If you compare to when the PS2 first launch, it's actually doing better. One of the other system is way cheaper and appeals to casuals so it's selling better. The other system with all the shooters are not selling that well. They include returns as part of their sold units, which I think is very misleading.

I thought Sonys plan to boost sales was the release of HOME and DualShock3 but those are both now coming in 08 so I don't know how Sony will improve sales other then a price drop. Oh and sighting Bluray as an attractive feature would be alright if older, 10 year old movies weren't price at more then $30. PRICE BLURAY MOVIES APPROPRIATELY!
