Going from 480 to 720 will be extremely noticeable.  Change the res on your PC monitor to as low as it'll go.  Then change it to 1024x768 or whatever is closest and see th difference.

coming from a SD source, you will be very impressed by the jump in picture quality. i can only assume that your new set will also do 1080i right? if not then i would suggest that you pass on your new tv and get one that will do 720p and 1080i as well. they can be attained for very little money in fact you could just get a good monitor for the size that you are looking for. i tell you what walk into your local tv shop and look at the hd material they have. then you will see what you are missing

You can actually see what things are from a distance and not just blobs (might be an overreaction)

720 should look fantastic. I don't have a 720p capable tv but I remember when I was testing an xbox360 with 480i-480p-1080i w/ Gears of War and 1080i looked lightyears beyond 480p. 720p should look just as great. Trust me when I say that you'll be blown away by the difference when you finally go HD.

720p is awesome depending on the size of your TV.  I have a 26" Sharp Widescreen LCD that is 720p, and I love it.  Really, 1080p is only necessary if you have  a TV that's 50+ inches.

Even if you have a TV that displays in 1080p, the games themselves mostly only play in 720p.   However, quite a few new games are 1080p compatible, so it looks like they'll all go that way in the future.

True. Most games are 720p.  You want to get a TV capable of 1080i if you are going to be watching blu-ray movies because they will bump down to 480p if you have the PS3 set to 720p.

Straight answer: YES! 720p does look good on the PS3, especially for 19". 1080p is only needed when the TV is 42+". So, in the end, that set will more than satisfy your needs. If it were me though, I'd go with something a bit bigger. 22" widescreen?

if you are using an SDTV, then of course HD is going to look better, no matter what the resolution.  480p would look better than your current SD resolution, 720p will amaze you when you make the jump from sd to hd

You will see a BIG difference playing in 720p. I'm using a 32" screen at 720p and was immediately impressed at the difference.

As mentioned above, make sure your screen will also play 1080i signal- Blu-Ray movies will not play at 720p.

is NOT hard to get an answer all u needed to do was some research on the net.  Maybe its hard to get an answer here at gamespot, because this question has been answered hundreds of times already.  why dont u just go to bestbuy and look at the hdtvs.  anyways 720P is a huge difference from 480i, but at such a small screen i dont think it would help that much.  anything under 32 inches isnt worth it.  why get a 19 inch hdtv?  do some research.

I know the TV you're talking about, I've been looking at Samsung TVs as well. I currently have my PS3 attached to a 61 inch HDTV. It does 720p or 1080i. 720p is amazing, and definately enough for you. However, it's the size I worry about. I've compared the 19" with the 26", and I'm telling you, if you want to enjoy your PS3, that extra 7" will mean the world.

720p is far superior to 480i/p, even if 1080i/p is the new one today, 720p is still really really good

well 1080p is just a small difference to 1080i, not big enough to make a difference so it doesn't really matter to me, you have to be a really really big HD technology freak to actually be able to see a lot. but yeah, theres not much, i read an article where it says theres really no difference and they make it sound like 1080p is overrated so 1080i is good enough.

Yes, 720p is worth it. I take it your going to get a PC monitor that is HDCP compatible (needed for the PS3) At 19inches I take it you'll be sitting in front of it like a computer monitor, right?

Also, please understand the difference between support and display. Any HDTV now-a-days supports 720p & 1080i, heck, even EDTVs support those, but what it ends up displaying is totally different. The only 1080i tvs out there are old CRT based ones, like your tube tvs or bigger bulky CRT Rear Projections. The only other type of tv that can really show 1080i are 1080p tvs. All 720p tvs will say they support 1080i but can not display 1080i, so they convert it to 720p, even if the tv says 1080i while showing it.

But whatever you get, if you plan to watch HD blu-ray movies, like others have said, the display needs to be able to support 1080i input as the PS3 won't convert it to 720p for you. So a PC monitor for example usually doesn't have the compatibility to accept a 1080i signal. Some 20.1 inch PC LCD screens do have HDCP and 1080p support, once converted it's equal to around 945p at 16:9.

Alot of people are saying that 19" is too small, if i do go and buy this 19" will the quality be bad? I only want this 19" becuase it has
HDMI
Priced nicely
And my room isn't that big
If anyone can suggest a better HDTV for under say £250 (including any V.A.T and shipping) post away

At a 19" monitor, you don't hardly need much more than 480p.  720p is definitely more than enough for a 19" monitor.  You don't really need 1080p until you get up over 50" HDTV.

I have a 50" 720p HDTV and it looks amazing.

Do what's good for you, not for everyone else. 720p is perfectly fine. If you were happy with 15" SD than you'll be happier with 19" HD, especially since size/space is a concern. What would you do with a 32" 720p HD TV if you've already determined 28" is the absolute biggest you can go?  Read the reviews, do your homework, and if this TV fits the criteria you're looking for then go for it.

Your current set: 15" (most likely 13" viewable), 640 pixels × 480 pixels resolution (307,200 total pixels).

Your future set: 19" (19" viewable), 1440 pixels x 900 pixels resolution (1,296,000 total pixels).

Results: You gain 6" of viewable screen and an additional 988,800 of viewable pixels.

You're most likely also gaining a Progressive scan image over an Interlaced image which is clearly noticeable even in the same res.

Is there anyway to defo confirm its 720p? Its just that it doesn't have progresivise scan on the key features. So does that mean it will be 720i?

The 720 refers to the number of pixels tall a display is and is the second number in a defined resolution, such as 1024 x 768. The display you're looking at can display images up to 900 pixels tall (1440 x 900). As far as progressive goes, I believe all LCD's do Progressive.

Make the jump all the way to 1080p if you can.  720p looks leaps and bounds better then 480i/p, and 1080p looks better then 720p.  Anyone that tells you 1080p is only noticeable over 42" is either lying, hasn't actually seen it themselves, or just regurgitating what they have read on the internet.

Play with your computer monitor a bit and you will notice the resolution difference is noticeable.

However PS3 looks way better on both 720p and 1080p over 480 so if the cost is really that important to you, go with 720p.
