my TV supports both but for some reason my PS3 only recognizes 1080i with the component cables.

Also, make sure you updated your PS3's firmware to support 1080p output, and change that setting accordingly.

Also, HDMI cables work. I've seen some quality ones for under $10 online (before shipping)

Here's an article from wikipedia explaining the difference between 1080i and 1080p: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080i

And the 2nd post is right that only HDMI can do 1080p

But the 3rd post is incorrect when it says update to have the ps3 do 1080p. The ps3 came 1080p ready out of the box. The only update for the ps3 as far as new native resolution updates will be for 1440p.

by "Update" i think he meant to "update" his video settings on the PS3... not do a system update.

oh and 1080p is also supported by component. if its supported by the tv of course. 1080p is not exclusive to hdmi

"Component video is capable of producing signals such as 480i, 480p, 576i, 576p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p."

Yeah but not on the PS3. The PS3 doesnt allow 1080p with component.
