i dunno what file system the ps3 formats its hd in, but its limit is probably bigger than the largest 2.5" drives available now. I have a 320GB drive in mine right now and it works great.

Yeah, pretty sure it supports the maximum drive capacities available right now. Got a 250GB WD drive in mine.

PS3 uses FAT32 as its format system. Normally on a PC, it would be limited to 32GB only. But the PS3 does it a different way where even a 320GB HDD will not be problem and is usable within the PS3.

So, the limit as to how much the PS3 can support for HDD space.... well, its more like a question of a limit in how much your wallet can shell out for a HDD.

i don't think it uses fat32, i was curious when i took my old drive out and plugged it in to check. my macbook recognised it as a Smart File System formatted drive (lol!) but who really knows....

yeah, it's just xp that limits you to 32 GB. I think MS just wanted to force everyone to use NTFS, lol

I think Sony has proven to have a better idea of how to use HDD space over how MS is using HDD space. I think the PS3 can support any HDD that will fit in the console.

I saw something a while back about a digital HDD that has no moving parts in it that could hold huge amounts of data that would be able to be used in the PS3. The thing is it's extremely expensive at this time but in time the technology could get to a price point that the consumer could be replaceing there old disc driven HDD's for one of these HDD's.

It uses FAT32, SFS is basically FAT32 under MAC. In Windows, it'll be labeled as FAT32.

Missed that out, thanks for reminding.

That sort of HDD you are talking about is SSD, in full Solid State Drive. It isn't digital, it uses flash as a way to store data(just like your thumbdrives, memory cards and what not).

SSD's space are fairly limited now, add to the fact that its price is insanely high. It'll be mainstream for laptops in 2 years time however(seeing as how much it has fallen since it was unveiled nearly a year ago). SSD doesn't really give much of a performance advantage over conventional HDDs either. It produces less heat, but in actuality consumes more power as well.

The only way currently to maximise your loading/installing times on the PS3 currently without breaking the bank, is to get a Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB HDD. It is basically a 2.5" HDD fitted onto a 3.5" heatsink.

Yes FAT32 can be supported up to 2 terabytes so the PS3 should recognize it. Unfortunately Windows 2000, XP, Vista limit the partitioning of FAT32 to 32GB. Damn M$ bastards.

Actually, the reason for that is because with the nature of a file system, if you'd had a 2TB hard drive formatted with FAT32, even a 1KB file would end up occupying about 64MB of "disk space". It was more of doing so in the interest of reducing wasted storage space for indexing files. At least with modern NTFS, HFS+ (what MacOS uses), ext3 (which Linux uses) and so on, we could have petabyte-size hard drives without having to worry about cluster sizes getting too large.

Yes, it will see a 1TB as it's boot drive. Not talking external, which is of limited use. With the PS3 slim, "Advanced Format Drives" are not an issue. However, it will not format a boot drive bigger than 1 TB. I tried. https://www.facebook.com/notes/jeff-dranetz/maximum-logical-drive-size-for-ps3/10151679084920238 I used a SATA to eSATA PS3 extender kit. (see link) Using an external drive as a boot drive is achieved with a POWERED eSATA enclosure. I tried a eSATA cable powered unit, did not work. Anyway you don't want the new drive to over tax the PS3 PSU. Also, it will not add to console heat, I am guessing lengthening the life of the console itself. If you don't want to go this route, any laptop, hybrid, or SSD 2.5 drive 1 TB and under will work. I had a 500GB 7200 rpm laptop drive in before the upgrade with no adverse effects. Some have warned against heat and power requirements of 7200 rpm drives over 5400 drives. For the enclosure I ended up using a 1TB 3.5" Western Digital AV-GP drive., designed for always on use. An enterprise server drive might have been quicker. I would recommend a desktop drive over an enterprise drive due to the fact I keep the enclosure always on for convenience. Everytime I power on the PS3, it's already fully spun up.

I have 1TB in one slim PS3.

I have 500GB in my original 60G PS3.

My friend wanted to one up me, he's got 1.5TB in his slim PS3.

EDIT: It's incredibly cheap to upgrade, and it's super easy to do it yourself as well.

It's Highly recommended once you do your DUE DILLIGENCE and get a proper HDD brand and ensure that your HDD is a good one for PS3 (user ratings, reviews, etc).

2.5 inches is the key, not 3.5.

It's fantastic for PS+ users.

I thought the PS3 used an emcrypted unix file system (UFS or UFS2)... pretty sure the PS2 was the same.

It uses FSCK to check and repair the drive and has permission handling in a unix type way wich fat32 does not do.

The limit its probably around 16TB or perhaps more if it's UFS2 which i think is 32 petabytes (32768 GB).

But what do I know.
