"I don't want to be argumentative, but I take issue with Microsoft either having a long tail, or being profitable, because they've never done either. They've never made a dime in this business, number one, and number two, they've never had a tail. They've never been successful enough to have a tail! So the notion of a back half of the curve doesn't exist for them. They stopped the Xbox and I kind of feel for the guy that bought an Xbox the month before they said 'we're out of business, we're moving on."

"With the Xbox 360 you've got an inconsistent design, some have a hard drive, some don't, and none of them have Blu-Ray, and the HD-DVD will be out of business in a matter of months. Is this a 10 year product? And by the way, it doesn't even work. Do they want to be selling it for 10 years and refurbishing them all for 10 more years? I don't think that's a 10 year product. You could disagree with me, or they could disagree with me, but I'd put that up against the PS3 any day"

no hes not. You know why? contrary to what Sony would say (and we all know that they have a history of bending the truth) there is no such thing as a 10 year console. I have nothing against any of the companies, in fact i want them ALL to do well, mostly because i own stock in gamespot and nvidia (who makes the GPU for the PS3). but lets face it. You can argue that the PS2 will have a 10 year lifespan. Im sure it will, it still sells. However, there is nothing modern about it now.

When Nintendo and MS come out with new consoles in 4 to 5 years time (and believe me, they will) do you REALLY think that Sony will sit back and not put out a PS4 JUST because they said the PS3 was supposed to last 10 years? Yes it can last 10 years, with the last 4 years being the back up system to the PS4, the new kick butt machine. Nvidia is releasing within a month or so a new PARALELL processing chip that is supposed to bring supercomputing power to desktop PCs. You dont think that in 4 5 years there will be an amazing version of that chip thats cheap enough to make a console with?? You dont think MS will incorporate that aloneside 1 to 2 GB of RAM, DX10 (or maybe even 11). Imagine a multicore processor using Nvidias new technology. 5 years is an eternity in the tech world. DO NOT doubt for a second that we wont see a console of that power in by 2011 or 2012.

So dont doubt for a second that Sony wont make one with those same specs, call it a PS4, and realease within that time frame.

All this talk about 10 years is complete and total ignorant gibberish. You have to be REALLY naive to not even think its a POSSIBILITY that the PS3 will take a back seat to the PS4 within 5 years.

If you still dont believe me, just wait and see. But mark my words.

If people keep buying, then they will keep making it. Yes, ps3 can be a 10 yr meaning SONY's factorieswill keep producing new ps3 for (roughly) 10 yrs before stopping and making something else. It can also be a 11, 12 15 or 20 yr console if people keep buying it.

youre taking this 10 year thing too litterally

Sony has been making consumer electronics for the better part of the last quarter century, they know full well how fast technology advances

that doesnt literally mean they will put ot the ps3 and wait 10 years and make the ps4

the ps4 will come out long before then to keep up with the technology

it just simply means sony will continue to develop for the ps3 even when the ps4 is out for at least 10 years, instead of abandoning their current user base for the sake of the ps4, which was what he was getting at with MS and the xbox and 360

Umm it's called lifetime who says it has 2 be new to still be alive? That doens't make sense, as long as it's selling well it's still has life, and that's what the PS2 is doing and there are still games coming for that system. If you want Sony can add some new add-ons to the PS2 if that'll make it feel any more new to you.

Oh yeah and M$ should stop taking jabs at Sony because until they win a console war they should keep their mouths shut, they have no right to talk about other companies until they've won. I'm not saying M$ can't win or that they have a bad product, but they're running their mouths like they own the war. And it's long from over.

pancho76, I think you're completely right. But, the thing is, I don't think that Sony is planning on making the PS3 they're top of the line system for all 10 years. Like you said, it will be replaced before that, I'm sure of it. I think what they're trying to say is that they're not going to give up on creating software for it for 10 years, like what we have with the PS2. People are just looking at it on the surface and assuming that they're referring to it being their "main console" for 10 years, which I don't think is what they're trying to say at all. Like I said, the PS2 currently has a junkload of stuff coming out for it this year even though it isn't their best console...and I think that's all they're saying. They're just not going to give up on it right after the PS4 comes out, like what has become the fate of the original Xbox....that's my belief anyways. :)

Sony will make the PS3 a 10 year system, just like the PS was a 9 year system and in it's 7th year the PS2 is the third best selling system(including handhelds). I have no doubt in my mind that the minds who are responsible for Playstation hardware design is hard at work thinking about the PS4 right now as we type.

And the 10 year lifespan is not something new but it is something that Microsoft failed to accomplish with it's XBox. The NES and SNES both had lifespans of 10 years give or take a year. The gameboy had something like a 14 year run. I just hope that MS doesn't dump it's 360 owners the way it did it's XBox owners.

I wouldnt count on it since all the latest tech trends point to blu ray as the next gen storage media

the next xbox will have to support a high capacity storage medium, either hd dvd or blu ray, leaving the 360 obsolete

Yes, I will agree that high capacity optical media is the way of the future but that doesn't mean that MS will just pull out of the XBox 360 b/c it doesn't have HDDVD or Blu-Ray. If that was the case then Sony should have abandoned the PS when the PS2 came out because DVD was the future and then abandon the PS2 because Blu Ray is the new tech.

no youre rightit doesnt mean that at all

I'm just saying I wouldnt count on MS still developing for the 360 when the next box comes out
