That claim cannot be taken as truth. Sony is basically obligated to say that a price drop isn't coming. If they confirmed a price drop for April, nobody would buy a PS3 until then. That's lost revenue. You won't hear about a confirmation until immediately before it goes into effect.
It might drop when the price of making the ps3 gets lower. sony is still losing money for every ps3 sold. probably(we're all guessing here) will drop to $300 by winter time and drop $50(both types) by maybe summer
Hopefully soon, im not about to pay 190 to repair something i bought for 400 with a faulty laser, that just happened to burn out in the 13th month! i hate sony customer service
The PS3 will not be made any cheaper until a new model revision comes along. Last November, i was in the exact same dilemma and was wondering when was the right time to buy a PS3 - guess what? you missed it and you're just going to miss more fun on this fantastic console, if you wait any longer. The price is NOT going to drop anytime soon. Probably at the end of the year, at earliest, but then again, no word about it. Sony's very own CEO has clearly made an official statement a few months ago: "we are still a business, you know" :D I still remember those words, as it was what tipped the balance for me. Those of who don't know (not that Sony would go around advertising about it) Sony is selling the PS3 with loss (yes, they are) and with the recent new 80GB and 160GB models introduced last year, with only 2 USB ports on each, no backward compatibility, etc, Sony has made an ultimate effort to cut costs of production on its next-gen console. Currently Sony is still selling the PS3 at a loss, but the loss is considerably less, but still, there is currently NO profit made by Sony when it sells the PS3. Sony's hope is that it will gain revenues from the profits made from games sold on its system, which is exactly why Sony works so hard to prevent hackers from cracking the PS3 console to play game backups. Analysts have said that Sony is expected to break-even by the end of this year. This means that Sony will be able to sell the PS3 at the same price that it costs to manufacture. Still, there will be NO profit for Sony on the PS3's sales, but then for the first time ever, Sony won't be making any more losses when selling the PS3. All that is still speculation on the part of analysts. Remember that the PS3 contains a bluray drive, which is very expensive itself. Check the price of a bluray player and you'll see that the PS3 is an incredible bargain if you want to enjoy your bluray movies for the best possible price. There is also the beast at the heart of the PS3; 7 processors beating at 3.2Ghz each, called the Cell technology. There is nothing in the console world that comes close. The XBOX360 has only 3 processors at 3.2Ghz each. Either way, if you want to wait, fine. But you'll be missing out on one of the greatest games ever; Killzone2, released just weeks ago, along with all the PS3 exclusives released before. The PS3 is exceptional value for money, and Sony has officially stated that it will support the PS3 until 2016, so you know you won't lose out if you buy a PS3 now or later. Any other console will never be able to hold that long, as both the XBOX360 and Wii use normal DVD discs which can hold up to 8.5GB, which is extremely limited space. The PS3 uses bluray discs which can hold up to 50GB. I bought my PS3 in November last year and i truly believe that it's one of the best decisions i have made.
I can't remember which website had emailed me about sales going on, but it was either amazon.com, newegg.com or tigerdirect.com that had the PS3 80GB version up for grabs for $300. I doubt it's going on right now but if you are patient and interested, keep your eyes peeled for those sites. I personally think $400 for the system isn't a bad deal, but I do use most of what it has... Except it's fancy photo gallery tools. I'm sure my family wouldn't care much to see a bunch of pictures of my drunken friends and myself doing ridiculously drunken spectacles of stupidity on 42" of hi-def.. With more games aging for the system, it's easy to find sub-$25 used ones worth a spin from Game Stop. Beware! It seems that purchasing a PS3 makes you a large crawling target that plenty fan boys would love to blast their meaningless "console war" rants amongst... Not that the PS3 fan boys are much better... Two morals here. First, PS3 consoles seldom sell for sub-$400 and fan boys are like a plague of zombies that are better off dead. All hail the PC! I'm kidding.. :)
If it makes you feel any better, though I have no idea why it would, I too am waiting for the price drop before I buy a PS3 and get rid of my 360. I don't see myself missing out on anything by not having one right this instant, as the games that are out now will be out and available later as well--they aren't going anywhere. If you're a patient person, just wait it out. The only sure way to tell that there will bea price drop is to go out and buya PS3 rightnow, and within a month the price drop will be announced--that's what happened to me when I bought a 360.
You want them to take out even MORE stuff out of the ps3 to make that price point? Well, I suppose that the HDMI could go -- no, wait, Sony is also a **AA member on both counts, so they want that delicious DRM to screw everyone over with. get rid of the BluRay? No, all the games are pressed on BluRay disc even if the game content itself could have fit on a standard DVD5/9. They've already removed BC, flash memory slots, wireless... No controller? No, because then they'd get sued for double-dipping by making people buy controllers after buying the console. No hard drive? Yea, no... Sony basically created their own problem by making the BD drive so slow that hard drive installs are mandatory now for ps3 games. No USB ports? ... Well, how are you going to recharge the controllers and plug in the PSeye then? No, USB lets them make money, so that won't go away. Make 't3h c3ll' be its own GPU? :lol: then the ps3 will perform worse than a 486 with intel GMA video. :lol:And NVIDIA would sue the living hell out of them for breach of contract. And considering that the glorified C3ll was at a 17% yield rate when they'd started making those chips, I think it's definitely in their best interest to bring that up before trying any more feature cutting. No DVD playback support? Completely stupid, and Sony still sells DVDs of their bad movies. Yea, Sony Pictures wouldn't enjoy that. No Ethernet? Well, then, their SL ripoff Home certainly won't get off the ground then. Make it HDMI-only and remove the legacy A/V and optical audio? Might work, except they'd have to spend $0.0000000001/unit more to bundle a better cable. And considering that removing BC already shaved $0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000001/unit made, they'd really hate that. ;) :lol: And all this will make the original 60/20GB models that did have everything go up 1000% in value per day on the scam central known as eBay. :evil:
the best any one can hope for is an announcement at the Game Developers Conference for a price cut at the end of the month if not that e3 if not e3 then prob some time end of the year for the x-mas rush maybe jus my .02

I thought it was the sourcing that made for such tedious load-up times. Even with games installed on my hurting 80gb hdd, I still have one hell of a time waiting for scene load-ups. It seems more obvious with some games (read: Half Life 2) than others. SFVI is slightly faster loaded onto the hdd, but I don't think the space vs load-up quickness was worth the trade off. I'd say most of my non-PS3 exclusive games seem to take forever and a day to load. My theory has been poor source coding and too many unforeseen memory leaks combating into one wonderful puddle of.. Poo. I don't care that my PS3 doesn't have SD card slots or whatever else it's missing. That's where my PS3 Media Server and PlayOn chime in. PS2 games don't matter to me either. Give me some more 1080p games, though! Devs are definitely slacking on this. the anti-aliasing is poor at best (i'm a PC gamer soooo.. I'm sorry for the whining) and the added resolution definitely helps pick up the FSAA's slack. Jagged photo-realistic race cars are mediocre at best. Luke Skywalker looks like he has a lego aura surrounding him. Phone lines look like a sophisticated MS Photo job. The PS3 needs to be tuned into what it's best at doing, not into a generalized machine that can do everything. A Jack of all Trades will never be seen as the Ace. In order to be the Ace, you must set the pole of quality, performance and products.
