When will the next PS3 SKU w/ backwards compatability come, if ever?

I'm sure this has been asked many times, but I haven't been browsing this forum much lately. If anyone has information, just post it. I have the money to buy a PS3 and games I want are finally nearing release, but the dilemna is that there's no PS3 SKU out now with backwards compatability. I simply cannot buy a PS3 without it. Thanks.

WTF are you talking about? the 60 gb sku has full PS1 and PS2 bc, and the 80 gb has near full PS1 and PS2 bc. You need to do your research......

Except that most B&M stores are only selling the 40GB model, which has no BC whatsoever. I've come to understand that the upcoming MGS4 bundle will feature the 80GB model that still has software-BC for PS2 games. Not quite full BC (which would be my ideal), but better than no BC. My suggestion is to wait for the MGS4 bundle and get that - then you can get a DS3 with it, and easily one of the biggest reasons to get a PS3.

Ah, so this MGS bundle will have the Dual Shock 3? I'll probably just wait until that comes then. Any word on the price?

Thanks. That sounds just about PERFECT for me. I know the BC isn't 100%, but it's good enough. Now I hope that this bundle isn't sold out everywhere within minutes. :p

The only BC PS3's from now on will be ones with software BC emulation. If you can track down a 60 GB or 20 GB PS3 from the original run of North American machines, I'd highly recommend it. If not, just go out and buy a PS2.

I have a PS2, but it's on its' last legs. Games freeze. Can't even play a DVD without skipping 4000 times. I've tried cleaning the lense and the discs, but nothing works. I won't complain though. It has served me well for 6 or 7 years. I think I'll be content with the 80 gig. Not ideal with the emulation, but it'll do.

Or just buy another PS2 is you're desperate to play PS2 games. Software emulation has lots of issues, and would require constant updates I'm sure. But I guess it depends on your needs/usage.

That's a possibility, but I'd rather not have to, if possible. :)

The 80gb is still around in some places, and you may have to get it online. You can also wait for the MGS4 bundle if you wanted, because then you would also get a Dual Shock 3 controller.

As for the 80gb BC, it's almost as good as the 60gb, and eventually it will probably have a higher BC rate than the 60gb because of updates to the software. I've never had any problems with about 60-70 ps2 games on my ps3. When the 60/20 gb and 80gb are said to have 85% or whatever random number percentage BC, the games that usually don't work are games that have a slight pause at the startup screen or something along those lines that doesn't really affect the game at all.

Nothing can beat having the actual hardware to run the game. the 20/60GB launch models have the physical hardware needed for full BC with PS1 and PS2 titles. 80GB units must resort to software; 40GB has none.

Very true, but I can deal with software. Should be GOOD ENOUGH although not the BEST.

I'm surprised no one commented on how retarded the first replier in the thread was...Hah.
