Has anyone taken a look at the new Xperia phone?? It's a smartphone thats basically a psp go too. Does anyone else think console makers like playstation and nintendo will eventually stop producing new handhelds and start releasing phone/game devices instead?? FUUUUTURE FUUUUUUUUTURRRRRRRE

I'll pass on that phone. It doesn't play PSP games and as for as PS games goes it can only play PS1 titles. If Sony cuts PSP production it will be due to the NGP and not that phone.

so even if there ever was a phone capable of playing the same games as any handheld, you would still rather carry a phone and handheld console seperately?

For the most part yes. Especially if that device forces me to switch providers (in the new Sony phone case AT&T) and it would most likely rely on DD (main reason why the GO failed besides the price tag)

well im definitely happy that they're starting to add a controller to phones, i dont know if you guys ever tried playing emulators on a smartphone, but it's a real burden trying to see past your thumbs when you press the touchscreen.

You're probably right, it doesnt seem like handhelds are dying out (especially with the new PSP model coming out WITH TWO THUMB STICKS FINALLY) but I'm just hoping slid out gamepads for phones aren't some gimmick that wont be around for long.

Sony will keep making PSP handhelds as long as they keep selling. PSP,1000,PSP 2000,PSP 3000, And PSP Go has sold about 62 million devices since March 2005.

Not to bad for Sony's first Handheld system. So with the NGP and the Sony Xperia phone. The NGP will replace the PSP eventually and Sony will make an announcement that PSP is no longer in production.

As for the Xperia phone Sony will have a lot of catching up to do to catch the iPhone. Which is a different part of the gaming market from the NGP & PSP crowd.

So lets see how that Xperia phone does against Apple's iPhone & Android smartphones already out there, NGP just has to take on the 3DS.

Sony Xperia phone has at lot more contenders to take on. Plus it is a little late to the party..

I hope not, a phone is for calling people game consoles are for games... I'm sick and tired of companies trying to force evrything into phones some stuff should just be seperate I mean if the phone breaks it'sgoodbye console too and vice versa. I work on a site so I own a tough phone to make sure it lasts I certainly wouldnt want a PSP in my pocket too.

I pray to the gaming gods of Sony that they don't because I might want a second or third PSP as backup some day. And also, the regular PSP's good enough, so being cheaper opens more doors.

They won't as long as people keep buying the PSP. Besides why would you really want to be playing games then have to pause to answer the phone and if you spend that much time playing games then why do you even have a phone. Just seems dumb to me.

Coolyfett agrees with this! Here is the reason. Coolyfett loves that the PSP can play music videos comics pictures & wifi network, but phones are too important & having all that stuff on a phone will make Coolyfett kill the battery. Coolyfett does not want incoming calls on the same device he is gaming on. Coolyfett is not a big fan of that "its a gaming device crap" The PSP is an Entertainment Unit....its made to entertain. A Phone can also entertain, but then there that emergency factor.

Heck Yea Man!!! Those Iphones dont play real games. Real games kill batteries. Nintendo & Sony keep saying that Apple is cutting into their sales?? But Nintendo has never done the DS numbers NEVER! No other firm has ever had 1/3rd of the market. Even the Game Gear had like 1/10th of the market during the Gameboy days. What Sony & Nintendo have to do is just make waaaaaaay better games. Which is a complex concept. When people get addicted to Angry Birds or Plants Zombies why would they play Final Fantasy or Little Big Planet?? Its up to gamers to grow the industry. Not the industry. A phone is personal device. Would you hand your phone to a friend to play a game before you hand a PSP to a friend to play?? The PSP caught on because gamers actually saw it in action, but the DS had that factor, plus the GBA continuation factor aka backward capabilty. Now Sony is producing its first handheld with Backward Capabilty. Handhelds will only die when backward capability dies. That is not going to happen. This is way going digital with Sony is so great. The games are tied to a FREE PSN account. Once gamers learn how to read & backup their downloaded content they will have the digital media forever. Will people really transfer all their media to a phone??
