Almost every main character in a video game is a white man/woman. Ninjas and Samurais take on a Caucasian likeness. would you be less likely to play a game if the main character took on a solid ethic look to them, or was a black man/woman?donmega1

what about Niko Belic? he's foreign :P
Oh, And in Assassins Creed I'm pretty sure Altaïr Ibn La-Ahad is Arabic
I'd rather a caucasian Pro/Antaganist becuase relating to a African-American is difficult.
But I like asians more.....just look at my sig....
BTW im Jamaican.......
lets not forget about the thousands of other games out there polishkid99. and yes hes foreign and i think it made for a great game. don't you?donmega1Him being foreign made me like the game a lot, i hated the rest of the gta characters you controlled in past games, but niko is awesome :P

Who even notices stuff like that except for insecure people.
who...cares...?
its been like this since ever. the white man has always been the protagonist of anything since england took over north america.
Well, 1) There are hundreds (if not thousands) of races in this world, so I wish that folks would wake up and stop seeing only black and white people. 2) There is no "default black mentality", just like not all white people are hillbillies / Yuppie New Yorkers . Y'all have been watching too many movies / t.v shows. Get out sometime and live life.I'd rather a caucasian Pro/Antaganist becuase relating to a African-American is difficult.

@ Unassigned thats called the "trained" eye....donmega1I wouldn't really call it a trained eye. For years caucaisian lead characters have been around and the inclusion of african american or other ethnic backgrounds has only just started to appear in games within the past 10 years or less. And in most games where you can customize your character, the option is there.
@ Unassigned thats called the "trained" eye....donmega1Why sould someone focus their "trained" eye on something like this unless their insecure?
Absolutely not![QUOTE="Unassigned"][QUOTE="myloman44"]Does it really matter?myloman44
Take it easy.
I'm just agreeing with you 100%.[QUOTE="CTUDude"]Kratos is dark skinned if that matters =/ I think Caucasian's are the easiest to relate to in games. If you have a white protagonist, chances are no matter what colour you are you can relate to them no problem. It's harder for coloured people to relate with other coloured people. I'm not sure how to explain it lol. By the way I'm Asian =ObrotherreeseI think that you're partly right, cause only caucasians will keep going into zombie/demon/alien infested towns over and over (j/k). [QUOTE="samuraiguns"]

Y'all have been watching too many movies / t.v shows. Get out sometime and live life. took the words right out of my mouth, you go man, you go!Thanks to historical oversaturation of Caucasian characters as primary figures in almost all forms of literature and media, the Caucasian model is treated as the 'default'. Thus, it's less like a white person and more like a 'generic' person. Changing the race/color/gender immediately makes the character take on shades of uniqueness or alternate traits that everyone might not be able to identify with. GTA San Andreas is widely considered to be the best of the GTA series but many people won't play it because of its 'black' focus...not because they're racist but because it's harder to identify with such a distinct culture. Many people won't play a video game with a female lead because it either a) makes them feel like they're 'acting like a girl', b) are appalled or disconcerted with the sexism or some other reason.
But put your average, tough white man with a cool haircut, a leather jacket and a five o'clock shadow in the lead and almost everyone will love it because it's what we're used to from books, movies, cartoons and video games over time.
I'd like to see a world where there is no 'default' race or gender...where the lead character's visual design in a game doesn't affect the storyline or the quality of the gameplay. But alas, all I can do is write stories and draw comics about it...and stick to games where I can customize the character myself.

EGADS!! I was just bemoaning the fact that the threads on this forum were lacking of intellect and interest...but that is a wonderfully written post.
The only flaw I find in your reasoning is that of the female protagonist. I think that that's been proven incorrect as the Tomb Raider series can attest to. Also the last ten years has seen a somewhat significant shift in the construct of the default hero and other main characters, in cinema, gaming and literature. The Matrix, for example, while having Neo (yes pretty damn white) had a wide range of important characters derived from a wide variety of backgrounds. Morpheus' role of sage, the general who was black, the strong female roles (captains of ships, council members, etc) provided a refreshing twist to conventional western constructs. The popularity of those movies, and many others, I think shows a willingness by the western consumer to accept and indeed relate to any character of any background/gender/ethnicity as long as their motives are believable, their personality likeable and their fundamental humanness (forgive the word) distinctly developed.
On a side note: The japanese and asians in general have women predominantly placed in myth, legends and especially martial art flicks. They wield power, intellect and wisdom and play pivotal roles in many of these stories.
In essense, I don't believe it's the consumer who's been conditioned too far to accept variation in their hero. More so, it is the creator/develepor/writer who has been reticent in the past to try "new" things. But once one dares break from the norm, one will find an accepting public...as long as the story is good, people will watch it, read it, or play it. :)

For someone to have the type of car they drive in their sig and then suggest insecurity in others is a tad...ironic perhaps. :)
Actually my car in my sig is part of a collection of cars, a hobby just like gaming.I was thinking the exact thing but i wouldnt have explained it as well good post. Thanks to historical oversaturation of Caucasian characters as primary figures in almost all forms of literature and media, the Caucasian model is treated as the 'default'. Either way, Kudos to you for collecting cars like games. I was just pointing out what I saw as hypocracy (and a little mean) in you calling someone out on their 'insecurity.' But, enjoy the cars and the games.:)
What about the 50 cent games?
Anyway, its an easy answer. Up until now most people that buy games are caucasian in America. Austrailia and England are also large caucasian markets. There are plenty of asian protaganists through games. When marketing they just try and aim the game at the audience.
As more minorities start playing games they will branch out more. Other than that black (or non-target practice middle eaterns) will be a novelty. Can anyone think of main hispanic characters? Its all about the marketing and what is the most acceptable to the customer.
Face it, most things in our world have more to do with money than race.
I relate to my black ppl but like u i just seems to like asians more btw i'm haitianI'd rather a caucasian Pro/Antaganist becuase relating to a African-American is difficult.
