I think most external hard drives are fat32 and if they aren't you can format it yourself.

It doesnt matter what format you get the drive in.

You just format it yourself. But if you are using either Vista or Windows 7, you will need a 3rd party program, as they will NOT format FAT32. You can find these free online.

Yes you can just format it yourself, but on vista and later OS they block you to format higher than 4gb (they then force you to use NTFS)

Swissknife is a little program that format most drive. Give it a try

Edit: Guess I'm not the first to tell you that lol

Yeah, theres a reason why they dont let you format in Fat16/32 bigger than 4gb since files tend to get fragmented/corrupted in bigger size (at least more than NTFS). Why Fat32? is it forced on ps3? I never changed my harddrive or place an add-on.

NTFS is a propriety of Micro, so yeah it's "forced" on the ps3

Idk, you'll probably have to buy one and see or ask someone at the store you're buying it from. I used my ipod to back up my ps3 and I didn't have to format it.

Buy any external hard drive from newegg amazon or buy.com format it using a PC to be fat 32. Like others have stated if your using Vista or win7 microsoft will force you to use their "new" FAT format. Just do a search for a free program. Everyone says swissknife works well but it crashed for me. AP will only let you use 32 gigs to format FAT. Microsoft says it's because the format is unsafe at larger segments but really i think they just do it to sell their formats.

Can you please elaborate as to what exactly are you trying to back up? If you need to back up your data from the hard drive already in, all you need to do is connect an external drive with a usb and do a back up (utility already present in the os). You don't need to back anything else up, as any clean drive you insert will work (if i remember correctly from the time i changed my drive). After this point you can transfer the back up data from the external drive.

double click my computer on the desktop. right click properties on the hdd. should say there. as for buying one, my brother got a toshiba 750GB drive and i think it came with fat32. (Its black with a blue design running horizontal to the base 1/3 the way up from the bottom looks like it belongs on a car, its flat about a half inch thick and roughly the size of a big psp, very sturdy). depending on the store, ask the nearest employee if you can return it if its not. everytime i ask they say they didnt know and it is their job to know the products they sell. that means go someplace that pays commission ie NOT best buy.
