Most external hard drives, at least last I checked, already come pre-formatted with Fat32. And even if you find one that isn't, it's a simple matter of plugging it into a computer and (re)formatting it. (in Windows you go into [My] Computer, right click the appropriate drive, select "format..", and where it says file system select FAT32)
yea but any of the external hardrives that i see on best buy doesnt say fat32 on them

any hard drive can be formatted as either fat32 or NTFS. it doesnt have to say it specifically on the drive. but dont get it from BB. you'll spend alot more. go with either newegg.com or tigerdirect.com.

They wouldn't, since the drive itself can support almost any file system you put on it. FAT32 is just so widely supported that it is almost always preinstalled. (Though with FAT32 only able to recognize 2TB, this will probably change at some point in the future.)

I bought a 1tb external and that was preformatted in NTFS. My computer sees it fine, but the ps3 won't even acknowledge it's there for me to do anything with it.
Sony should have really gone with different format support - FAT32 was fine ten years ago, but it's basically obsolete at this point. So obsolete that new versions of Windows will not let you format drives with FAT32, you have to download utilities to do it for you. The only things that benefit from it are flash drives and memory sticks, as you're much more likely to get data loss when you unplug an NTFS device in use.

I didn't say all external drives were preformatted with FAT32. For very large drives, NTFS probably makes more sense... since presumably many people use them to store very big stuff. One limitation with FAT32 is that a single file can be no larger than 4,294,967,295 bytes (4GB minus 1 byte).

Really game saves are larger than that so I wont be able to back them up? fat32 is all the PS3 will pick up
anyold Harddrive can be either Fat32 or NTFS. For Computers and Laptops it would be NTFS. For Gaming systems and the like, It's FAT32. just format it like everyone else.
