I have a 40GB hard-drive but only 1GB of free space.

I only have a few PSN games, a dozen game data folders, a couple videos, no music, 1 demo and limited DLC (the SOCOM cold front DLC and maybe a couple map packs for a couple games).

I used to at least have 5 to 10GB of space but now I can't even get 1GB of free space.

Where might my space be going and how can I clear more space?

Thanks for any help.

a lot of it is installs....so out of games u arent currently delete there game data(not saved data) and you'll get some memory in return believe me ill bet you thats where it is

EDIT: to prove my theory correct...i did this myself i have a 80 GB BC model and i have lots of stuff on my ps3...i went from 25 GBs of space to 46 GBs simply deleting game datas from games i didnt play at that moment....i mean games like MGS4, Heavy Rain, RE5, AC2 all have installs over 3 GBS(im pretty sure) and well deleting that will give you memory back in return

I realized this also. Just delete those install files and you should be fine.

Get a new 500 HDD... !!!Dogswithguns
Or he can get a cheap 250GB drive for like $50..

Also, to lessen confusion, especially to myself,

It'd be nice if Sony took a page from one of their competitors and broke down exactly where the space is being used up at. Example, on a competitors console i won't name, it has it broken down like this: There's a section that says "memory", after you click on it, it displays - GAMES - GAMER PROFILES - DEMOS - VIDEOS - THEMES - GAMER PICTURES - AVATAR ITEMS - SYSTEM ITEMS - MUSIC - and shows the amount of space taken up for each and allows you to browse each section to delete whatever you wish. Why can't Sony break it down like that?? wtf..they need to hire some smarter people to redo the dashboard, seriously!

It's all in those game data folders. Install are hefty. You should regularly delete installs for games you don't actively play.

yes i do like that part of the "other systems" memory break down style they have....but honestly in everry thread all i ever see is you hating on PS3...or anything on it if you dont like it and have this many complaints about it why do you hang around here and if you have one then why? and if you dont have one then whats the big deal? im not trolling or flaming you i was just wondering

I don't think I have to state the positives of the PS3 all the time..we know the positives (and there's a large # of them), but the negatives really agitate people like me and the TC who try and manage our space the appropriate way and the dash is very clunky when trying to do that. It's agitating when Sony can't figure these simple things out. If you agree with me then there's really no need for your negative comment towards me.

Ok - that makes sense that it is the game data files that are taking up my space!

I atually knew this a while back and used to regularly delete them but I totally forgot about this!

Now I just want to confirm a couple things:

1) If I delete a game install for a game (but do not delete the game saves for the game), will I loose anything I can't get back?

2) What will I have to do next time I want to play the game (just reintall it if an install is required and re-download any previously purchased DLC?)

3) Can I delete PSN games that I have purchased and then just re-download them whenever I want to play them (or should I just delete their game data files - which takes up more space)?

Thanks for all the info.

Do NOT delete any games or DLCyou getfrom PSN. There's a limit on how many times you can re-download them.IIRC it's 5 times, and then you can't anymore.

Ok - so I won't delete PSN games BUT for not deleting DLC (like for example a COD4 map pack), where is the DLC even located? Is it in the game data file (if so, I guess I won't delete game data files for any games where I have downloaded DLC).

Something I never understood: GTA IV installs on the HDD for the PS3 but not for the 360 (well, I never installed it on the HDD on my 360). However, the 360 version boots up much faster than the PS3 version. You'd think that would be the other way around. Wish the PS3 would give you the option.

For games that you're not playing much any more you can delete the Game Data Utilities and keep their saved data. Next time you boot up the game you might have to do the install again but it won't eat up your HDD in the meantime. Just make sure you keep the saved data so you don't lose your progress. You can also delete you PSN games and re-download them from the store if you want to play them again
