Where is Niko (GTA IV) from?

Well, as you all can see from the title, I just would like to ask: Where the f*** is that dude from GTA IV from? East Europe?! Are you kidding me? What the hell does that mean? What if they said he is from West Europe, would that mean anything? Is West or East Europe the same as saying he's from the west/east coast of the US (a whole continent compared to a country)? God damn it no!! A French an English a Spanish and an Italian have very different cultures. It's the same thing for a Romanian an Ukrainian a Serb or an Albanian. You can't generalize it. But maybe I'm wrong; maybe I don't know enough stuff from the game. Maybe they revealed his "true" origin somewhere. So, again, does somebody actually know where this Niko guy is from? I just would like to know more, cause its sounds very stupid to me what they did with Niko's background. I am of course aware that this comes from a game who calls NYC: 'Liberty City'...

Niko is confirmed to be "Eastern European" from an article in Game Magazine. However, this was not a direct quote from Houser and was just added by the editor by using parentheses.

In the latest trailer, Roman is being confronted by his enemies who say "Where is your Russian friend now?" Now this could mean two things: either Niko himself is Russian, or Roman is in with a Russian gang. The second option seems more likely but both are up for debate.
