Guys, please help me decide on which Game of the Year should I get... I do not like Open World Games much, UNLESS there's a very good story like Metal Gear Solid driving the gameplay and exploration, otherwise I just dont care enough to explore. I did play one or two of Lord of the Ring games on PS2 and they were amazing and the gameplay of Shadow or Mordor looks great and seems to have good story too... on the other hand Witcher 3 has been touted as one of the best games of year/decade/of all times.

I am not really into potions and spells unless they are easy to do without me having to spend an hour trying to find/mix em up and using them takes a second and they are gone etc. I am really looking for a fun, crazy, dark, adventure filled story at the end of the day so what would you guys recommend? Thanks a bunch!

How close is the theme of the game to LOTR movies as I just finished watching the Extended additions on BluRay and love em!

It's close and something that will intrigue you is that they show you the origins of rings and how sauron made them

Witcher 3 is overrated but for sure it's better than Shadow of Mordor. Mordor is a fun little game, nice gameplay and battles, a simple story that works, some so so DLC.

Witcher 3 is on another scale. It's huge and it has great story and amazing expansions. Potions are very simple to make and every time you rest they replenish on their own so no micromanaging. That said you don't even need to use them if you're not playing on max difficulty. Spells are few and can be used often. Your stamina, the resource needed to cast them, replenishes even during battle.

I have done almost everything in both games, including dlc and expansions and the Witcher took me 225 hours, Shadow of Mordor took me 26.

So if you want an experience with good battles, not very deep but definitely fun, go with Shadows of Mordor. If you want a massive game with tons of story go with The Witcher 3. As I said I think The Witcher is better but I would chose Mordor over it if I didn't have months to spend on a single game.

I am pretty much out of any games to play right now and there's a few on my radar that I am waiting for the price to drop - they are Alien Isolation, Until Dawn, and the best of em all Uncharted 4 - but I can easily wait on these 3 and thought I'd play something for a few months before these get even cheaper as they are pretty short games so no rush on em... I love story driven games and that's what I am looking for here, thanks for guys' reply!

AND the two things I am afraid to run into:

1. I start playing Mordor and be like ok gameplay is fun and I need to kill more enemies but are there gonna be any more story cut scenes any time soon? If not, I just won't care and not finish the game...

2. Witcher is so vast that it might overwhelm me with technical micromanaging stuff in the background that I won't get far and not even enjoy the story its got... and let it collect dust...

@Coolboy420x: I wouldn't worry about either of these.

Mordor has plenty of story cut scenes for almost all major missions and generally has a cinematic feel to it.

Witcher is vast and may overwhelm you with sheer size but it has very little micromanaging. It's quite simple as far as RPG mechanics go. At normal difficulty you don't even need bother with crafting gear, just equip the best you find.

You pretty much summed up both games, you just have to make the final decision. I own and enjoyed both games, but I will say that the witcher 3 holds waaaaaaay more content overall then Shadow of Mordor. As far as the storylines, they are even, but I'm a big fan of the LOTR Universe.

I preferred Witcher but Mordor is also worth a try - both have interesting stories but the variety in Witcher was greater imo.

Sounds like I need to get both these games at some point lol, I might jump on Mordor for now as its much cheaper and Witcher GOTY edition is still 20 days away and most likely will be full price. Thanks yall!

Yeah I doubt you will really go wrong - but FWIW there's little-to-no micromanaging in TW3. It's not like Pillars of Eternity or something - it's vast and narratively deep but also extremely streamlined in terms of mechanics. You learn some basic combat mechanics and just quest your way through the world as you feel like. I wouldn't even worry about complexity with regard to the spells - there aren't that many, they each serve a clear and distinct purpose, using them is entirely optional, and more than half of them are just buffs (although a few staples are extremely handy)

Thanks n ya sounds like its made fairly easy to navigate your way through this without having to worry about mix and collect stuff to level up almost to the point its not fun anymore. Wonder how much W3 will cost when it drops on Aug. 30th - didnt find it on Amazon yet.

After playing both games, I do recommend The Witcher 3, it's has great main story as well as sides stories worth exploring.

Can't go wrong with either games really, especially if you're Lord of The Rings fan. ;)

that's the best approach.

shadow of mordor has some of the best combat if not the best combat of any game of its type (assassin's creed, batman etc) and certainly better than combat in tw3 plus it has the unique nemesis system which throws up some super cool combat scenarios. the goty version is only £18 on amazon. it's cinematic but don't expect some unforgettable story, faithful lore or really intricate game world. the focus is nearly entirely on combat, but that's ok because it controls so nicely, is so well paced and the levelling system is so nicely structured.

slice and dice your way through som over the next couple of weeks by which time the w3 goty will be out and then you'll literally need to devote a couple of months to get through it all, unless you're lucky enough to not have a job in which case it'll probably take a bit less

Shadow of Mordor is mediocre, The Witcher 3 is a masterpiece.

@Coolboy420x: It'll be 60 but the two expansions are pretty much individually the size of shadow of mordor.

You'll get the game and the 2 expansions + there are some other dlc

Gwent is fun but optional, a lot of choice work like a bethesda game but the side quests on the other hand are so good that they beat out most main stories in video games, characters are more interesting, and overall it just has more diversity than shadow of mordor.

Shadow of Mordor got fairly boring after a while.
