MAybe because Monster Hunter relies on more than click the monster, press skills, use pots when necessary, and you win. You actually need to act like a real hunter to kill everything. That means patience, aiming for weak spots, use basic survival skills, and the such. In short, actual skill. If anything, this game is almost the true definition of RPG.
However, its a love it or hate it game. Don't bash it if you hate it just because it isn't your type of game. And there is no point of getting 1 now that 2 is out. 2 has everything 1 has, and then some.

I'm not saying its bad, I'm simply saying I can't understand why people like it. Also, I highly doubt its the "true" definition of an RPG. RPGs are known to have amazing stories, and apparently this title doesn't have one. Something I do know to be true is that the story for most people is the core reason they come to RPGs. Also, was this really the "best" selling game in Japan? or did it simply sell well? Also, another thing to consider is that the more people who have this game the better it is. Since you can only do Ad Hoc co op of course the game would be more enjoyable if you had ready access to other fans of the game to play with.
