Also the 40 apparently doesn't have wi-fi compatibility. (From what I heard.) But yea, again I'd go with the 60 GB, it seems like the best bundle with backwards compatibility through the emotion engine.legofan712
40 does have wi-fi....i know, mine is sitting right in front of me.....but hey don't forget that 80gb comes with motorstorm ...(if you even care) and 40gb comes with spiderman3 (whoop-dee-do huh?) ..heh...no 40gb is a good deal, really is...if you got a psp, you can use it as a pro stick duo reader....having only 2 ports isn't terrible...those controller batteries last forever i swear with no rumble.
The best is the 60.
The next option is the 80.
I'll personally slap anybody who buys the tard pack that is the 40gb.
if you want the 80gb ps3 i would get it fast i heard there going 2 discontinue them and just make the 40gbRocBoi_18
You're very wrong.
If you wanna play PS2 games, want Motor Storm and F1, get the 80gb version.
IF you want the Spiderman 3 blu-ray get the 40gb version:P

Guess I will get in line to be slapped. I bought the 40GB last week and don't regret it.
I don't need the BC, I don't own any PS2 games. Maybe you should think before you make silly comments.

You're exceedingly counterfactual.
I reccomend nearly everybody stay away from the 40gig, unless you are super duper on a tight budget. Sure, the main difference is the 80gig plays ps2 games right? Well guess what? The ps3 upscales and smoothes ps2/ps1 games and they look quite nice, than being played on the ps2. Plus, you get a wireless controller to play all those games with. I couldn't stand playing final fantasy 12 before, as all the jaggies in the game gave me headaches *seriously*. Though after I got my ps3 in feburary and that upscaler update came out, the game actually looks pretty decent now.
Another thing is, the 40gig only has 2 usb slots. Meaning games like rock band, are going to give you a mess of wires. Not all usb dongles work.
The 40gig may seem like the way to go, but the 80gig is worth it in the long run. I promise.
And you know, if sony every planned ps2 originals on the ps3 someday *doubt it, but 360 did it with xbox originals* I seriously doubt it'd work on a 40gig ps3.
So getting the 80gig relieves you of messy wires, any worries in the future about not having enough usb ports, somewhat allows you to sell your ps2 on ebay or somewhere for some money back *depends on if you have like fighting sticks and such* since you'll have a ps3 to play ps2 games on, and has a large hard drive.
40gig- It is alittle bit less power consuming, and saves you on cash.

Silly comment? Not at all actually.
You're supporting the notion that hardware makers can release various SKU's throughout the console's lifetime. This causes people to be apprehensive and not buy them as quickly as is needed to recoup costs. That leads to less games being developed for the system and causes alot more problems than it solves.

Where'd you find this info. Sorry to inform you, but you're wrong.
Maybe you were thinking of the 60GB, it's similar in features to the 80GB but is discontinued now. Sony just released the 80GB - just tell me, why would it make sense for them to discontinue a product they just premiered?
the 40 gig lacks some hardware that the other has.... It's up to you if you think it's worth the extra money for. For example.... you won't be able to connect all the instrumentcontrollers for Rock Band on the 40gig model, but a 150 dollar PS2 will cover the shortcoming of not being able to play PS2 games on it.... which will have better compatiblity with PS2 games over an emulation of the PS3, and comes with a rumble controller, too.
Pick your poison.....
As for me.... if I were to buy a PS3, (which I'm not. PS2 is all I need, right now)..... I'd go with the more expensive one. The games for the PS3 run for 60 bucks.... so, what's 99 dollars? I think it's worth 99 bucks. You never know when you'll be kicking yourself for the lack of those extraUSB ports or be glad that you don't have to switch consoles to play aPS2 game (if it works). As for emotion chip versus emulation? That's an unknown. I can only guess that they can update emulation software, and can't update the emotion chip. So... in time the emulation software may surpass the emotion chip. But then again... the way the PS3 is going.... I doubt they will put much effort in updating the emulation software. Best option is to just havethe older PS2 handy.... If the emulation doesfall short thenthat oldPS2 will cover me.
Just buyng the 40 gig is the most logical choice... Harddrive space really isn't a factor.... you can replace that, yourself. For a little under 100 bucks you can get about 120gigs of space.... 40gig is the most logical.... but the 60/80gig are the insurance buys. And in blackjack when the dealer has an Ace showing...
I think the 40s will suffer short space all to soon. With an estimated 5gig cache for each major game from start of 2008 (as an example) thats not alot of room for games, but the 60 and 80 are way better off.teebeenz
This is also true, I've got 42 gigs left on my 60gb. All I've got are the GT:HD demo, Mortal Kombat 2, Fl0w, Ratchet Demo and Uncharted Demo...2 themes as well. Where did the other 18 go!? Cacheing for my games apparently...

What does that have to do with my post? Its too late, Sony is releasing sku's out the wazzu... There is a 40GB, there is a 80GB, the biggest difference being the HDD size, inputs (card readers, 2 usb ports)and the BC. Each consumer weighs what their needs are and buys the machine that want.
Personally I plan to use my system more for watching movies than anything so the 40GB was all I needed. Just because you have an opinion on whats the better buy doesn't make your opinion right, you needs are different and view the system differently.
So it was a very silly comment, because you don't speak for me, or the other thousands of people buying the 40GB.
I never let the BC issue affect my decision to get the 80gig, but at that time the 40gig was not yet released. I still have my PS2 which I'd sooner keep for old times sake than sell if for what it's really worth, which is not a whole lot, plus I have every gamesfor PS2 that I like, which includes 35 games+.
If you're not too concerned about playing old PS2 games, get the 40gig...BC is overrated in my opinion anyway.

emulation surpassing EE chip? not tru 60gig plays 98% of ps2 games and the 80gig plays like 70% and sony is not focusing on that anymore. EE is the best way to go if u want ps2 games to work
80gig or the 40gig is a grewat deal
either u have the money or you dont
if u have a ps2 and it works get the 40gig
if u have ps2 games but ur ps2 is crapy get and 80gig
IMO 40gig is the best bc once u get into ps3 games ur not really guna want to to go a play ps2 games anymore
card readers and 4 usb ports not a big deal
