I ask this because ive seen lately that a lot of people are upgrading because of the upcoming media service and also because most of sony's games from now on are going to be released on the PSN.

As for me ive upgraded to 160GB HDD, my PS3 is a media beast

There isn't any data that you can't move. And no, picking a new hard drive is pretty easy... just has to be a standard SATA laptop hard drive.

But perhaps you guys can expand on the process you used for upgrading. For instance, I was thinking about buying an external hard drive along with a 160GB internal drive. Figured it'd be easier to back up my entire hard drive to the external driver vs. using a thumb drive to export all my saves and downloaded games. I'd just delete my game utility data since it's recreated when I play.

Also, I'd read early reports that the stock hard drive can be hard to unscrew and take out, did anyone have any problems with this?

I'd thought about that also but since you can't play games or load saved games directly from the external drive, I decided to go with the internal. The external is great for storing movies and media though.

that simply isn't true. the vast majority of PS3's "retail" games will be on Blu Ray. maybe the TC got confused when seeing the number of PSN arcade games being made and thought that all those games are retail games.

I have a question for the ones who have an External HDD. I know I can copy my PS3 game saves and back them up on the external HDD, but I can't find a way to do the same with virtual memory cards for PS2 & PS1 games...is it possible to do this?

well... not really but upcoming games like warhawk, socom, little big planet, and other games that dont come to mind are going to be released on the PSN and retail at the same time. But on E3 they said if the game is in your HDD it will load faster.

Yes thats exactly the one i have, i was planning on buying the 250GB but i didnt think that i needed all that space. But i recommend the 160Gb, after the ps3 does all the formatting and stuff u have around 140Gb for yourself.

In no way does changing your Hard Drive void the warranty. There are detailed instructions in the manual on how to do this. All of the systems OS in stored in flash memory in the system. Once the new HD is installed then it will ask you if you want to format it for the PS3. Hit yes and away you go.

I would advise that if you are looking to do this back up all of your game saves onto a thumb drive, create a folder on your computer to store them and then transfer the files back once the new drive otherwise you'll lose 'em.

I'll get a larger hard drive after I buy a PS3 for when I go to college. However, that's three years from now. I'll have to figure out how to deal with just 60 GB right now.

i dont know but i remember seeing ppl post that the warhawk beta was like 900mb or something like that. Expect it to be big though because since its going to be High definition content, its going to be big, just look at xbox live, the demos alone are like 1.5GB and the movies are like 5GB

Anyone know if there is an extreme difference between the performance of a 7200RPM 250GB HDD and a 5400RPM 250GB HDD? I was thinking about getting a 250GB 2.5'' HDD for my PS3 but I wasn't sure if the 7200RPM model would be better. The major difference that I do is is that it's $200 for the 5400RPM and $255 for the 7200RPM HDD's on Newegg.com

what i hear is no. IGN did a 5400 and 7200 RPM comparison for the PS3 and they saw no difference in perfornance.

and 7200 RPM drives generate more heat! the PS3 is hot enough already! i would get a 5400 RPM if i were u. lol!
