BC was one of the reasons I bought mine; I bought the MGS4 bundle because it was the last chance to get a backward compatible one. I've noticed, however, that the PS2 games look like crap and the PS1 games look even worse. I've wondered if it's just the HDTV making them look so bad. Do the older games look better if played on a standard definition television?
Ironically, the opposite is true. Removing BC is one of the reasons they were able to lower the price, which caused sales to increase. But if they were to bring BC back, that would probably help sales.Floppy_JimActually that is incorrect. They could have left the software emulation in the new ps3's which worked on most games almost as good as the hardware bc. That wouldn't have cost a penny. they thought it would hurt PS2 console sales, in turn it just hurt ps3 sales.

I suppose high def would make any rough edges stand out a little bit more, plus your looking at the older games through next gen eyes so to speak
I think that its true Sony has stopped BC because they are still marketing ps2 - and i think they are turds for it.

While the last BC consoles did have software emulation, it only emulated the PS2's "Emotion Engine" CPU. All of those models still had the physical PS2 GPU chip in it's chipset. So it would cost Sony to create software emulation to emulate the entire PS2 chipset.
I highly doubt it will hurt sales, PS3 has great library to continue sales.
PS2 had a fantastic run for over eight years and even today 2-3 good games are released that aren't available on PS3 however PlayStation 3 is moving forward. Currently we have many fantastic exclusive games as well as multiplatform and this year alone we have excellent line up from both aspects to look forward to.
If you have missed PS2 era of games, you can pick up PS2 for 90$ and even 50$ used in majority of gaming electronic stores.
I don't believe it's fair or progressive to hinder and keep bashing PS3 for not having backwards compatibility. Would it be nice that every model had option to play PS2 games? Sure it is but PS3 is a console on it's own and I believe Sony is doing proper decision to move on with the system as main goal in mind.
Also, don't forget that for more then a year when PS3 was released 60GB and first generation of 80Gb PS3 all play PS2 games.
You can still find 60GB online if you really want it.
I still play PS2 games and I have used PS2 that I paid 45$ for.
PlayStation 3 should be judged for it's current generation and future.
Initially it would help sales but being a former owner of a launch 60 gig(YLOD) I played PS2 games 3 times in the 2 years I owned it. It is a great feature to have but how many people actually used it? How many people still played PS1 games on their PS3? on their PS2?hiryu3I use it all the time. I'll be playing the God of War games until the day I can no longer play videogames. Ive played FF7 and MGS and the first 3 Resident Evil's again on my PS3 since I bought it. I could give a chit about web browsing and blu-ray movies, for the amount of money they charge for this thing it should be BC. Simple.
So do I but I like my setup to look clean and classy, not with 6 different systems hanging off the thing. I also dont care for digging my Nintendos out of the attic every time I get a jonesing for some Mario or Zelda.i still have a PS2 so it didnt matter at all to me.

i bought a ps3 to play my ps3 games... and a few ps games. I kept my ps2 to play my ps2 games. The thing that hurts sales is that they are still producing ps2 games. If they kept BC then there wouldn't be a need for the PS2 to still be in stores. I'd just buy all games for 1 system. They should stop making ps2 games all together. IMO...
I wish they would have kept bc as well. With the economy slowing down my spending habits i could have dipped into my old ps2 collection to pass the time when i'm waiting for a new ps3 release. If i would have to pay for a dl to get that option back i would have had the money to pay for that by now. Also i'm glad i don't have the old 60 gig version since a few people seem to be getting the yellow lights issue with those.

A reasonable theory, but it's not because of the next-gen eyes. I owned a PS1 and PS2 and the old games do not look nearly so bad on theiroriginalsystems. They also look a lot better when transferred to my PSP. On PS3, the PS2 games get a fuzzy/blurry look to them and the PS1 games become ulta pixelated. Guess I'll have to try my PS3 on a standard setup to see if that's the cause.
it could hurt sales but the ps3 is made for ps3 games and the ps2 is made for ps2 games, idk y ppl cant just get a ps2 if they wana play ps2 its like 50 bucks now
These days backwards compatibility is the consumer-friendly decision. The Nintendo Wii is fully backwards compatible with the Gamecube. The 360 can play a large number of orginal xbox games. I bought the MGS bundle for this very reason. I've never owned a PS2 and I wanted access to those games (well, 80% of those games anyway). Sure, I could have picked up a used ps2... but then I'd have four consoles in my fairly small apartment. I'd have a devilish mess of wires/cables and a whole lot of crap in my floor space.
This whole "we've got bc", "now we don't", "wait, here it is again in a different from!", "but no longer..." game is pretty obnoxious.
Me! I love being able to have titles from PS and PS2 alongside my PS3 games and being able to play them all on one console. A lot of the Hardcore gamers with PS3 systems will no doubt have firm favourites among PS and PS2 games and would be really peed off if Sony removed backwards compatibility.
I would gladly pay more for my console if it meant I did not have to get rid of my PS and PS2 games.
honestly, if you really wanted backwards compatibility you would have brought it by now. I have over 20 PS2 games that i dont want to go to waste. Thats why i got a PS3 with BC when it was available. KingFrostmanWhat if I didn't have the money to get a PS3 when it was $500 minimum but want to get a new PS3 now with at least 80GB, yet my PS2 memory card is full, so I'd really like to have B/C? The only reason Sony did this is to try to get people to buy more PS3 games and keep PS2 sales going. They're simply trying to milk the consumer, because they could have software b/c on these PS3s with a firmware update.
At first I thought BC was a wonderful thing, but, as an owner of an 80GB with BC, I can honestly say it's been at least a year since I've played a PS2 game on my PS3. The PS2's library was wonderful, but I've played most of the greatest games I wanted to play for the system and I agree it's time to move forward. Every time I consider renting or buying a PS2 game on the cheap, I run across a PS3 game I want to play instead. The PS3 may have needed the BC icing on the cake in the beginning, but I don't believe it's as necessary now. It can't be that many people buying a PS3 solely to maintain their PS2 libraries. It can't be that hard to get a functional copy of the world's most popular home video game console (PS2).
Frankly, I'm more interested in resurrecting the PS1's library.
I agree with the people that say that it helped the sales to get rid of the BC. But I don't really care, seeing as how I have the four port 80g:D
i dont care bout sales as long i've got fun with the games , i bought a ps3 to play ps3 games and have no ps2 games so i dont care either not having the feature ,
i think its not impossible to play ps2 games on any ps3 with a emulator , ive seen windows installed on a ps3 somewhere so this should be possible when it works on the pc
my guess it it will be added to all ps3s via a firmware update after the ps2 stops selling. Running by full software emulation

and that would be the most sensible thing to do......man i wouldnt even mind paying for an emulation released on psn - HEY SONY DID YOU HEAR ME? ILL FREAKIN PAY FOR IT!!
Having 400 consoles and controllers and cables etc etc under my nice sleek HDTV just pi**es my girlfriend off and i can manage that easily enough without her tripping over last gens console.

I am in the same boat. My wife isn't a huge fan of any console hooked up to the tv, let alone 4 of them.
Also, I think that Sony could put out a download for cost and people would pay for it. I know I would if it was reasonably priced. After PS2's sales slow down they wouldn't have a reason not to do that.
Yes and No, taking away BC will sell less PS3's(probably) but it makes the ps2 much easier to sell in it's final run.
Should have been an early adopter. It defenitely sucks to a degree that they took it out, but by doing they gained market share so good for them. I know I will be pissed if my launch 60GB ever breaks because even with all the great PS3 games, I still go back and play some of my favorite PS2 games.
