Also im not entirely sure this is the place for this. Hardware section might be more appropriate cos it may get locked.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_TV

  • be half the weight and cost of Plasma or LCD displays
  • require around 25% of the power required by Plasma or LCD displays
  • be very thin like Plasma and LCD displays are today
  • have a very wide colour gamut
  • have a 50,000 hour life
  • maintain full power output for the lifespan of the laser, resulting in a picture that doesn't progressively degrade over time, such as with plasma and LCD technology

Really? I thought it would be like 2009 or somehting. Man i think i might pick one up if the word is good on their release. Is it just Mitsibushi who are making them or is there competition. Cos everyone knows competition drives up quality.

I agree with you on all points except the price. Even though they might cost less to manufature, they'll cost more in stores cause it's a new technology and all that crap.

LCD prices are dropping and they are a bit more proven at the moment. I heard of the stories of easy burn in images and problems with the original Plasmas and stuff, so I generally try to stay away from the first batch or two of a brand new product

I'm not sure what LCDs you are comparing this to, but I have a Bravia XBR and it runs 92% of the colour gamut. has no degration with time. But as far as production cost vs comsumer price I don't expect Laser to be any cheaper by the time of their market inception. Not to mention Canon and Toshiba's bickering over the technology will most likely slow it down. Sony had a Laser-back lit SXRD Panel tv at CES this past year, 60" and very impressive. Price tag to match. On a similar note, i was talking to one of the Sony Canada big-wigs recently and they are hoping to be showing off a 14" OLED this xmas. 3mm thickness, 1,000,000:1 contrast. and flexible...but a higher price than LCD I'm sure.... The more vivid the experience the better.... I'm still waiting on 3D.

umm laser tvs will be expensive as the technology is new. secondly, the power emited by the coherent laser sources is inherently dangerous to human vison....NO THANKS!

nice little quote from wiki bud....

Safety. The high power emitted by the coherent laser sources is inherently dangerous to human vision. Proponents claim that integrating the devices with the needed diffusion filters removes this risk.

Nobody has yet to mention that if these tv's hit the market anytime soon, the price of all the lcds and plasmas will plummet.

This can be a very good thing for the techy consumer.

I for one would not mind a big plasma in the bathroom, facing the toilet.

Well SED, carbon nanotube and OLED television were projected to come out a while ago and still haven't hit the market. They were also projected as being thinner and cheaper, but thats just in theory once manufacturing costs come down after a few years of production. I wouldn't hold your breath for this laser tech either. Its going to take awhile to become widespread. Meanwhile plasmas and LEDs are dropping in price every few months.

Sounds very promising, i doubt christmas 2007! Nobodys even heard of them! Plus new technology is never cheap, but if it is cheap; ill pick one up! But i doubt it, probably cheap to manufacture, but they'll sell it for a mint on release!

Everyone knows that Nuclear Fission tv is the way to go.
