Why are most games for PS3 not supporting 1080p?

Every game for the xbox 360 supports 1080p why not PS3 isn't it supposed to be the superior console visually? I get frustrated having a tv that is full HD and not being able to have my games run at 1080p. Anybody get why game companies are doing this?

The 360 has a chip made specifically to upscale all games, the PS3 leaves it up to the developer to program their games to upscale off the CPU....it's simply comes down to system resources.

It really doesn't matter anyways considering most games look the best at their native resolution, which is almost always 720p. Upscaling = Loss of quality in most cases.

actually neither supports true 1080p. what the 360 does is upscale the resolution. The ps3 tends not to do this for most games because it is not as powerful as the 360. (im not trying to start anything just ignore that bit if u dont believe me). Either way neither consoles support true 1080p. the actual rez they both display at is 1280x720 (720p). you can force ur ps3 to go to 1920x1080 (1080p), but it will lag severly on many games that do not support it.

If you force 1080p, nothing will lag in games, just watch the Cryengine 3/Crysis 2 tech demo which does show the PS3 having the upper hand.

Games that are native 1080p= Wipeout HD, Heavy Rain.

If I 'force' 1080p on the PS3 most games will simply show at 480 so I really don't know what you're talking about....and really I don't see what the Crysis demo has anything with the PS3's ability to upscale games..... This whole thing has nothing to do with being more powerful, it's simply that the 360 has a dedicated chip for upscaling the PS3 doesn't.

Funny how a simple question with a simple awnser gets turned into allout fanboy war....

Check yourself you can't turn off 480i, if the game doesn't support upscaling and you try to force 1080p you will only get 480i except in a few games... And saying it doesn't do anything isn't quite true either, some people will not see a difference, but quite a few get a smoother looking picture.

Does not REALLY do anything, please read. My monitor does not give me that option of taking away 480p not i, but on certain sets or what have you, you can uncheck everything except 1080p. Don't know what causes this, but it does force 1080p on everything.

The only way you wouldn't have 480 as a locked choice is if it was a PAL system and it didn't have 480 at all.....

Lol, you want to argue and think you're right, go right ahead. His question is answered. Like I said, I have seen this done on a TV before, but it does not really matter as upscaling does not really do anything. 1080p native games are the only ones the matter when talking about 720p vs 1080p.

Relax gentlemen, you are both wrong. The best way to play any game is to hook it up to my big flat screen and take a few shots of tequila. You won't even care if its running progressive scan or interlaced. And upscaling is not FTW.

Upscaling results in NO difference. Trust me. And in some games, like CoD4, it results in worse quality. The 360 has a Dedicated graphics chip that upscales games so gamers think its 1080p, but really, its more like 740p(i know theres no such thing but if there was that would be what upscaling 720p would look like. Its hypothetical:)

Are we talking about upscaling DVDs? No, and how good you upscale a DVD depends on the chip. Not worth worrying about when there are actual 1080p native games. TC was wondering, and I said there are 1080p native games that look much better in comparison. Devs don't want to bother with something like that. Such a failure, go be uneducated somewhere else, in a blind test, you would not be able to tell.

Native GAMES>Upscaling.

^No, if you upscale to a resolution, it's that resolution.

That's fantastic but the original question is why it doesn't support 1080p compared to the 360.... which would basically be asking why most games don't support upscaling.....everyone already knows that native 1080p games look better than an upscaled game...I don't even know how that got brought up...

I don't even know why you bother responding, painguy1 was trolling, and you start arguing for no reason. Sorry if you can't get past your own bs. I'm not even disagreeing with you except that fact that I have seen a TV that could force 1080p on the PS3 and not have negatives like running in 480p.

Well, this is a question to devs, but the PS3 obviously does not try to have the high numbers of the 360 all games full1080p ftw upscale. When u upscale a game with a native resolution, it can look better but only so much, some games wont some will, depending on whatever the native resolution of the game was. In the end, when a game is upscaled to 1080 p on a 360 and same game is on native res on PS3, it should look better on PS3 with native res. I would guess that 360 upscaled games look stretched and what not.

There is a long story as to why PS3 did not have on-par or better looking multiplatform games until recently, but it has nothing to do with hardware power.

That may not be the game's fault. On a Samsung 216BW monitor, it looks much better on 1080p upscaled. Could depend on the Tv or monitor you use.

Because the PS3 can't handle it, though some PS3 games can, anything lower means it'll upscale to fit the screen, look at this list of PS3 games, most PSN games can handle it, and remember, 1920x1080 is 1080p. Just because a game is native 1080p does not mean it's better then games that are 720p. Anyone that would take 360 over PS3 because of upscaling can go back into their holes. Anyone who also thinks this is a reason 360 hardware is better may do the same. Upscaling is suppose to just give a little improvement when you have a 1080p native screen. Sometime, depending on the TV, it may look worse and there are reasons for that. TC asked why, because 360 has upscaler chip and PS3 doesn't although programmers can make it upscale, simple as that. Does it really matter? No, there is barely any difference/end thread please, this has gone on for way too long.

^GOW3+Heavy Rain, if they get Crysis 2 and (better then Cryengine 3 looking)Rage running that res, would be also very good. If they get it at that res with 8xaa that would be a nice in your face to PCs.

People are just too lazy to develop games in a true 1080p resolution. Only a few games have this, and you'll notice they're usually the ones that they know will do great on the market, so it's actually worth the effort and money. No point in wasting the extra time and labor for 1080p for a game that might flop. Upscaling 720p to 1080p basically makes the image look like stretched out crap, which is why the PS3 doesn't really do that. The native resolution is the best resolution to play a game in.

actually neither supports true 1080p. what the 360 does is upscale the resolution. The ps3 tends not to do this for most games because it is not as powerful as the 360. (im not trying to start anything just ignore that bit if u dont believe me). Either way neither consoles support true 1080p. the actual rez they both display at is 1280x720 (720p). you can force ur ps3 to go to 1920x1080 (1080p), but it will lag severly on many games that do not support it.

The ps3's hardware is technically superior to the 360's, but it was so poorly designed that it preformes alot worse than the 360. Also the ps3 version of cryengine did not contain much shooting or particle effects as much as the 360's. im not going to argue over the cryengine 3 because im going to stick to playing the superior PC version so w/e. And upscaling is CPU intensive btw

but it's generally a false statement; the Playstation 3 is equal to the Xbox 360. I don't think we can discuss it here, has, to be brought to system wars.

I kinda figured it had to do with the developers. My friend was wondering the same thing about the 1080p thing. I owuldnt know honestly since I dont have a nice HDTV yet.

I do have my reasons, they are based on facts. I'm not telling you PS3 is so much better it's going to destroy the 360, but it has an edge. System wars is for people who don't play games and argue, PM if you want.

Effort needed into putting upscaling when there is no upscaling chip would be considered not worth it. Wether native or upscaled looks better depends on your output devices. Monitors seem to take upscaled content well, while some people have had poor experiences with their TVs.
