Thanks but I am looking for a reasonable explanation as to why the PS3 is not able to wirelessly download near the same speed as a wireless computer hooked up on the same home network. Either the PS3 is for some odd reason slow with downloading or maybe our ISP's are throttling the Sony network. I am using Comcast broadband. My statistics are listed in my first post at the top of this thread.
I hear what you are saying but that does not explain why my computer can run the speakeasy download test http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ with a fast 6,175 kbps but the PS3 runs the same test 10seconds later at half the speed at 3,238 kbps. The speakeasy test should have nothing to do with the playstation network for the test is through my PS3 from the http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ website. Again, everything is setup the same way though my wireless network with my Comcast broadband connection.

Please try the test with your PS3 and post your results. Damn, you get 18,605 kbps with your computer from Comcast?!?

It was at about 6,500 kbps the first time I tried, but for some reason, the second time was light speed, so I posted it.
I just tried a third time and

Why is the cause for my slow PS3 downloads? I have the 80gig MotorStorm PS3 which is about a month old.
I am using Windows XP2 home edition PC and using Windows Media 11. I am using Comcast broadband with a Linksys WRT54G wireless G broadband router and Linksys WMP54G wireless G adapter on the PC. Router is upstairs, computer and PS3 are downstairs but not close enough to wire together. I am using WPA encryption with my router.
I just ran the Speakeasy Speed Test on my PC and my PS3. My download speeds are as follows...
Computer:
Download Speed: 6175 kbps (771.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1613 kbps (201.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
PS3:
Download Speed: 3238 kbps (404.8 KB/sec transfer rate) Previous tests averaged @ 2,000 kbps
Upload Speed: 54 kbps (6.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Why are my download & upload speeds so darn slow on my PS3 compared to my computer? They are both wirelessly connected to my router.
I have played around with the Applications & Gaming router settings on the Qos tab but I did not noticed any benefits.ghudson666
I wondered the same thing so disabled the wireless connection and hardwired the PS3 straight to the router. I have a near T1 speed, but it made no difference. ????
Could be... your router . Firmware update. distance from the router (and walls / electronic interference). the PS3 is 802.11b/g , what is your router? someone else on your network eating up your braodband (i.e cable internet, or unsecured wifi)brotherreese
I updated my routers firmware when I bought my PS3 last month. Everything is fine with all three of my computers using a wireless connection to the router which is connected to the Comcast broadband. I am using a Linksys WRT54G wireless G broadband router and Linksys WMP54G wireless G adapter on all three of my PC's.
The PS3 is slow downloading and uploading. Many have posted that they have slow connections even when hardwiring their PS3's instead of using wireless. I suspect the PS3 is just slow.

Download and upload speeds are the same on my PC and PS3 even though my PC is wired connected and PS3 is wireless.
Try the following: Use static IP address on your PS3, Change your wireless channel, Select your router to use only 802.11g instead of 802.11b/g, Use WPA2-PSK security.DMZ your PS3

seems to be a little slower but not by much.
Why does it take a long time to download stuff on ps3? becasue sony isn't smart in how they place servers they should have quite a few servers in america but most seem to be based in hawaii or japan or something. Which is why it often takes huge amounts of time to download updates to games.

I dunno about that but i have the old 60GB version of the ps3 and it takes me anywhere from 30 to 40 minutes to download a playable demo if that long...pretty fast...not sure what your connection is but i have cable so download speeds are faster
It's not the PS3 itself, if I go to any of those speed test sites in the PS3 browser, it gets the same download speed as my desktop and I'm on a high speed broadband connection. I tested the speed both wired and wireless as well, and they were identical.
You might want to do some research into if your router has any issues as it relates to the PS3. My Linksys WRT610N router had issues when I first got the PS3 and I had to do some configuration changes to make things work properly.
I've noticed that when I play games (especially online ones) the downloading is considerably slower...hazelnutmanWhen playing online in any game, downloading goes to pending instead of downloading. I think this was added in at a later date, so older games may have slipped through their testing and might still download while you play.
I got a PS3 and a 360.....we got SOCOM: Confrontation the other day and I couldn't download the update while I was on a wireless connection.....I called Sony and told them what was up and after they walked me through restoring my default settings (which I knew wasn't gonna work) they gave me a list of ports to open on my wireless router....ofcourse I was on hold forever and then put on hold again after the first thing didn't solve my problem. I wasn't about to screw with the ports in my router...especially when the computer works fine, the laptop works fine, and the 360 works fine.....all at the same time even. But seriously....I plug the wireless adapter into the XBOX, scan for the network, pop in the password, and we're up and gaming no problem. I just don't understand why the PS3 can't be the same way. Eventually I ditched the router completely and ran the internet straight from the modem to the PS3, got the update, and switched back over to wireless to play the damn game.....funny thing is that tech support suggested I do that....but I feel after shelling out the $400 for the system that I shouldn't have to go through all that. Animatrix868Just open the ports and DMZ for the PS3. Also make sure the IP's modem is not working as a router along with your router (I found my modem was set as a router and to be changed to a bridge connection). I did this on my DSL connection and it made a world of difference. The thing is to get the modems IP address it needs to be connected directly to a PC.
