Every time I get a new game, or even get on my PS3 for any reason... I have to download updates out the wazoo... Why are there so many?

I just bought Socom Confrontation... I picked it up about 2 hours ago... I thought "Finally I get to play the new Socom! SWEET!"

Well boy was I wrong... I turned my console on... "Disconnected! Download New Update!" "Update 2.50 Available!" 30 Minutes later... update is complete... so now I am thinking the same stuff as before... I am thinking how sweet this game is going to be!

WRONG! "Socom Update 1.2 Available! 473MB!" ... and here I am 1 hour later at 46% because this update is taking forever for some reason...

Why does the PS3 have so many updates and why are they so huge?

hahah your wrong, so many people complain that sony gives us like 1 update every 2 or 3 months, you my friend, have been disconnected from PSN because if you play like every day online it tells you when a new update is needed, and its not that often , believe me, same goes for the games, basically, the updates for the games come with some fixes for the online servers that are very helpfull, or trophies support, and there not that big, just the PS3 firmware updates.

SOCCOM is a bad example ... its an online only game and therefore weapon balance, slight map modifications, new maps, new content is often added.

Most PS3 games do not have many updates...

kind of like the same deal with the 360 when you buy a new game and it has to update your system right(this is not an anti 360 post but pointing out both current gen systems do this)? welcome to this gen. firmware and software updates galore.

Yeah, but on a 360... There is a dashboard update like once a year... that last maybe 10 seconds... and game updates... are simply "Disconnected, Would you like to update?" "Yes" *3 seconds of updating* "XXX connect to Xbox Live"... it takes seconds to update 360 games... it takes hours to update PS3 games...

I just want to know why PS3 updates occur so much more often and are so much larger...?

How the heck have you been online with a ps3 and not gotten the firmware update yet? Did you wait until you bought Socom to plug the thing into the wall? Its your own fault, you post on the forums, you know Socom has patches.

if its taking you hours to update your games, then the problem is with your internet connection mate. on average my game updates take almost exactly as long as the 360 updates do. i only have a mid range connection to boot. as for firmware i am fairly sure the 360's is quarterly if i am not mistaken, and getting more console updates is a good thing in the first place and i for one am glad both companies do it. it shows they are actually putting SOME support into their consoles. the only large software update i have ever come across was socom's. either this is the only game you have played with an internet connection active or you are trolling.

If you got on your ps3 all of the time then you should've had the new firmware update a while ago lol. So somethings isn't adding up correctly. Also all new games don't require a firmware update thats only for the ps3, they may need a patch or a install or maybe neither. But something with your posts aren't adding up TC.

P.S. I'm not saying anything but in your profile you've reviewed 2 360 games only and have no games listed as owning. Why no ps3 games reviewed or atleast have some listed as owning. Just a observation.

It seems to be the premise of next gen gaming. If the game you got was just released, chances are you won't get an update for awhile. If you bought the game late or got the PS3 itself pretty late, then welcome to update land. Usually most games don't require you to update twice as the previous updates are implemented in the newer ones so you don't have to (you just jump to v.1.02 instead of having to go through 1.01)

These are how things have become. They find a bug later on, they release a patch. That's just how it is today I'm afraid. Not any different from PC games in terms of installing and updates.

Sometimes new games require a patch which is ~25 mb. Only takes about 10 seconds to install. Big deal.

Firmware updates aren't frequent enough to bother me at all. If you're getting a game at around the same time of each new firmware update, then you'd be getting a game every few months or so.

Also, only two of the games I own have had updates: Resistance because Insomniac updated and improved the online play every once in a while and Uncharted because Naughty Dog patched in trophies.

Most games without online never have game updates, so you're probably buying mostly online games that usually get patched to fix bugs or improve the balance of weapons in online play, etc. It's something that you should appreciate because that time it takes to download the patch will likely save you hours of frustration that would come with playing a glitchy game. ;)

I have no problem with game updates as long it make it better, like what the guys said new maps better codes for the engine ect.. however i agree with ps3 firmware part, i mean why we have to download the whole firmware all over again ? if we can dl only the new stuff not the whole firmware each time ( 90s MB )

You're obviously trolling then. 2.50 has been out for a month, so ITS YOUR OWN FAULT. If you just bought one, getting wammed with updates I could understand, but you've ALLEGEDLY had it forever, game online all the time, and you have 4,000+ posts on this forum. YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER.

PSN is Squeets... and I am not referring to ONLY the 2.5 update... I am referring to the large updates for games on the PS3 in general...

I wasn't saying I was mad soley because I had to download the 2.5 update and the Socom update... I am used to downloading updates for things... I was saying that I was mad that the 2.5 update and the Socom update were several hundred megabytes of data that were needed before I could play my game...

And what do you mean by I am "dodging something"...? I am confused by this statement... Normally "dodging" means "avoiding" something... So I don't see how that ties into what I am asking...?

The updates make our playing experiances better by fixing whatever issues the game may have, I'm fine with that. Would you rather fewer updates and being frustrated that the games your playing have problems?
