Why aren't other devs using the Killzone 2 engine?

I'm surprised Guerrilla isn't licensing out the KZ2 engine. It seems like a generation beyond any other graphics engine except Crysis, but everyone still defaults to Unreal Engine 3.

I realize Epic's engine is made to be accessible/easy to use for other developers, while KZ2 may not be...but still, I would figure that other devs would be very interested in using the KZ2 engine, at least for PS3 titles.

I can imagine that first and second party studios have access to it, it would not be desirable for third parties, because its designed explicitely for the PS3 Hardware.

Because most developers have alot of experience with the Unreal Engine and would have to learn this engine, also since you believe its so above and beyond everything, why would Sony license it out, they don't want 3rd party games to overshadow first party games. Lastly middleware has to be able to used on any console, Sony will not license a engine to be used on competitors machines.

Insomniac? Sucker Punch?

Anyway, I would think it is because it would be hard to make a multiplat game using that engine.

Nope, they "enjoy their independence" as they have said before but Ratchet and Clank, and Resistance are owned by Sony. So, if they wanted, Insomniac could leave Sony and their game's rights behind and go work multi-platform and make a new IP.

Thats still considers 1st part imo, if i work for someone and they own everything i make, i think i can say there my boss.

i would imagine its because every Dev wants to capitalize on income. not pay out money to another company when their graphic options are satisfactory.

That doesn't make you first party, they are 2nd party since Sony is publishing thier games but Sony still doesn't own them.

Beat me to it. They are 2nd party devs. They are not a part of Sony but develop exclusively for Sony consoles.

That would be amazing. If they had Resistance, but with a SLIGHTLY more weighty feel (not as much as Killzone 2, bit below Bad Company) the game would be amazing. At the moment, it feels more floating gun than Modern Warfare which is saying something. Also, the Unreal engine is going to be gone pretty soon I reckon. Every time a exclusive, or big third party, game comes out, textures and so on are getting better and to compete, you have to match or get better - Unreal won't allow that up to a certain extent, because pop-in would become unbearable.

since when are they third party? they're both owned by Sony and have been making Playstation game ever since the Playstations came into existence (Sucker Punch did skip PSone though).

BrettB7400
But that's the whole point of licensing -- you get to focus on gameplay, level design, etc., rather than also making your own graphics engine. Licensing is an advantage. The only question is, when you license, whose engine do you pick? If KZ2 is similarly easy to program when compared to UE3, then I'd definitely go with KZ2.

Killzone 2 engine isn't easy to use and it isn't the best looking engine out there either.

U3 engine is crap but at least its cheap and easy to code.

I remember hearing an interview with the Naughty Dog CEO and he said they work with Guerilla games and other 1st/2nd party developers to get the most out of the ps3. Do they use the Killzone engine? no, but they do work together and share techniques and some technology.

Just because no one has released a game 8 months after KZ2 using it's engine, doesn't mean no one will. Most big games lately have been taking longer than that to complete.

lol that is the exact reason why i returned r2 after i bought it. I was like wtf? That little detail ruined the game for me and thats why I dont play BF (even though it looks fantastic) The camera is WAY to disoreinted. ( i know its to make it seem REAL ) but it justs makes me head hurt lol

Same here.

My answer to the topic question.....because having superb graphics is overrated. :D I'm currently playing Way of the Samurai 3. The game looks like it could also play on PS2 but gameplay wins.
