I know what you mean, some RPGs don't get started until about 5 or 6 hours in. Play Final Fantasy X. That started with a bang and kept going!

RPG's don't start climaxing until about 7 hours in. It gets really sexy and orgasmic. That is the secret to every RPG. Now with that my friend, you have been given the knowledge of choice.

Play something like Borderlands, it has light RPG elements, no learning curve, little to no dialog, and pretty much just throws you into the game.

I'm not a big RPG player either. But I like playing RPG's every once in awhile. I probably don't even average 1 per year, but it's nice to have a game that you can get into for a month or so before beating it. It gets boring playing "shooters" all the time, too many games 1st person and 3rd person mostly come down to shooting waves of enemies. Lately I've been finding that repetititive even when playing a great game like Uncharted 2. Uncharted 2 has a fine story, but Dragon Age is like playing through Lord of the Rings novel. I look at alot of the JRPG's not named Final Fantasy and scratch my head at them. But a game like Dragon Age: Origins I found REALLY easy to get into. There are RPG"s out there that if you don't enjoy the story/playing through them then you are truly missing out.

Valkyria Chronicles

Dragon Age: Origins

Final Fantasy VII (PS1)

Final Fantasy X (PS2)

Final Fantasy XII (PS2)

Dragon Quest VIII (PS2)

Demon Souls seems to be a must get, and it isn't so "story-centric" as most RPG's. So perhaps that would be less boring for you (other than the dying all the time). I would like to try out Mass Effect series on PC at some point. That looks like a game I could certainly get into. I'm not so sure about FInal Fantasy XIII, but will probably give it a shot. Star Ocean I am definitely getting for PS3 as well.

1 hour on an RPG is barely an introduction. Give it 10+ hours. If at that point you are still bored we'll chalk it up to ADD. :D

I'm the same, but if you look at games like mass effect or borderlands, these games are very accessible.

I would suggest an RPG with shooting elements...... depending on your PC, give Mass Effect a shot. It's pretty cheap now..

Depends on what RPG's you are playing. I really dont like the Final Fantasy turn based formula. But games like Fallout 3, Borderlands, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Demon Souls are alot of fun. They are games that are RPG's, but dont beat you over the head with insane anount of text, stats or slow gameplay.

He recommended it because it is widely regarded as one of the best games of all time. Just because you and a few other people don't like it doesn't somehow invalidate that fact.

Your opinion is just that: your opinion. The fact, however, is that FF7 is one of the most beloved games of all time, whether you personally like it or not, making it an easy recommendation when talking about JRPGs.

It may be recognized for that but the game doesn't get that interesting until the shinra building for gameplay. Unless you are compelled by the story which doesn't happen that soon unless you have already played through the game. This is not a good place to start for someone who has never played an RPG or doesn't like them

For you, perhaps. I, on the other hand, found it to be quite compelling very early on. It was one of the very few JRPGs that I could get into quickly, as well as stay interested in the whole way through.

From my personal experience, I would definitely recommend it to someone trying to get into the genre.

Well It is worse now for todays generation trying to get into it. I tried to get my friend into it and he complained how people would attack him when he was trying to look through his items and then he complained about the graphics  He should try Mario RPG or paper mario. Then move to FF VII when he can enjoy it more.

Yeah you need to be quick if your using the "active" battle system, although I think you can change it to "wait" or something like that.

You shouldn't force yourself into liking a genre. Either don't play them or do some research and stick with an RPG game no matter what it may seem like in the beginning.

Use the strategy guide. Seriously. I haven't beaten an RPG in over a decade, but if I honestly sat down and followed the guide I would thoroughly enjoy it. The biggest bonus in an RPG is not the story, but leveling and gaining new gear and spells. Yes you don't have to force yourself to like it, you just have to follow along with the dialog until you can actually DO something.. like all+lightning materia (FF7).

most RPG games start slow. especially when it isnt a sequel since they try to explain the world and all. there is nothing wrong in not enjoying a genre. maybe you should try action rpg games. somthing fast pacing. i cant get into bioware games but i see the quality there, on the other hand i played something like Diablo2 for about 3 years.

I think its simply that alot of people don't have the attention span for an RPG. People can play things like Fallout 3 or Mass Effect 2 because of the heavy emphais on shooter combat. But the whole character building, micro managing, dialouge, I don't think gamers today have much appreciation for that kind of stuff. That is why the FPS genre is so popular, it throws all that stuff away.

Really depends on what rpg you play.

I played FF 8 and 9 and couldn't get into it even after 20 hours.

But Kingdom Hearts, Rogue Galaxy, Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, Pokemon and other games I get just sucked in completely.
