why do the ps3 have to install games like mgs4? that kinda sucks since u can play a game rigt away on the 360 an wii. and why does it make a raother louder noise when u insert a disc than the wii.

The reason is that the blu-ray drive has a terribly slow read speed. It's quicker for the system to read data installed to the hard drive then from the disk. The install isn't required (as is evidenced by Killzone 2 and Uncharted), but most developers run into severe complications trying to work around the slow read speed. raven_squad
Is this a problem with all Bluray players or just the PS3?

There are some cheaper blu-ray players out there with the same read speed (2x), but the majority of them have a bit faster (4x). Still, the PS3's processing power is so above and beyond that of the other blu-ray players, it's still the fastest. Watching a blu-ray is far less demanding.A Blu-Ray disc holds a ton more info than a DVD or Wii disc. So things load faster if info is stored to your hard drive.

Probably a cheap blu-ray player inside the PS3. That's one of the many many faults of the PS3, having to install games..it's ridiculous. And MGS4 takes way too long and inbetween chapters it gets annoying waiting too. PS3 is the only system that has this problem. To be more precise, the drive is not slow at reading but only has one reading speed.
A regular DVD drive has multiple reading speeds, at the outer edge of the disc it reads at a different speed than the inner edge. Blu-Ray only has one speed set in the standard so we are insalling the game to help alleviate that problem. Some games get away with not installing but then load times may be reduced after an install so why not.
And that speed is slow. :|To be more precise, the drive is not slow at reading but only has one reading speed.mohmaaytah
[QUOTE="raven_squad"]And that speed is slow. :| More research is required. The Playstation 3's drive speed is 2x. They now have 8x blu-ray drives on the market.[QUOTE="mohmaaytah"]

Correct.
The DVD drives today are much faster at transferring data from the disc to the hard drive. I believe, though my be wrong, that the DVD drive in the XBOX 360 has a 16X read speed. Compare that to the 2X read speed of the current Blu-ray drive in the PS3. While the Blu-ray obviously holds more, it is far slower at moving that data off the disc than the DVD drive in the 360.
So, caching some data on the PS3 hard drive is definitely the way to go. And you only must do it once.
As for the drive making loud noises, one only has to play a DVD game on the XBOX 360 to understand what loud is, even today 4+ years since the 360's launch.

A 2x BR drive is able to move the same amount of data as the slowest moving 12x DVD drive. A BR drive only has to spin a disc twice as fast whereas a DVD drive has to spin a disc 12x faster for comparable performance and the BR drive sounds slow?emitsu97The blu-ray drive is capable of reading, at the maximum, approximately 9MBpsover the entire disk. The slowest read speed of a 12x DVD drive (that of the xbox 360 for example) is 9.25MBps (inner portion of the disk), and at the most, approximately 16MBps (outer portion of the disk).
Think of the PS3 as a computer system (it plays games and may store large amounts of data if needed). MGS4 is a big game, downloads are necessary. If the console is making noise, that means it's doing it's job. It's a powerful console, don't expect it to be "dead silent".

And yeah its annoying but its mainly multiplat games that need to install i think, not many exclusives other than mgs4 have to install i think. And its only for the first time, only older games or horrible games have taken ages to install for me so yeah. Im looking at you blood on the sand and dmc4.Please Log In to post.
