I understand with PS3 firmware updates but with games ? come on! an "update" should not take more than 5 minutes, I used to have a 360 and the longest an update ever took was 20 seconds, I thought the PS3 was supposed to be more powerful than the 360

Sorry to say this, but your internet connection blows baby chunks.

But go ahead and make a fool of yourself by blaming the hardware.

mine downloads at a decent speed too. it was really slow when i used at&t dsl but since i switched over to cable 'net it downloads as fast could be expected. you do also have to realize that some of the updates are pretty big.

They take longer because you are downloading more stuff, the majority of Xbox 360 updates are small because they rectifiy minor issues(if there is something major like the NXE it takes just as long). Whereby the PS3 is constantly adding new features therefore more to download.

What I don't get is that if you download something off Xbox Live you can just play it immediately, but on the PS3 you have to downloadand install it madness.

can depend on what time of day you download, the servers could be busy, truth is most are slow, one way to make yr downloads faster are to get an SSD HD :)

Well not necessarily, updates on my PS3 are slow, but updates for my 360 (and even the Wii) are quick. Maybe its the PSN that "blows baby chunks"

It has more to install. 360 updates are relativley small. Plus, I'm going to say that Microsofts OS is probably more efficient than Sonys. Its just a given. They have a couple more years of experience there ;)

I have often wondered this also, and I know exactly what you mean. You could buy a game a year after release on xbox 360, there could be several updates since then, and they only take 15-20 seconds. Somehow they must be a lot smaller than the updates Sony pushes out, but oh well, I just go and make a sandwich when I have to download and install something :)

Part of what you are saying is true(I use LIVE also)but I think the TC is blowing the subject out of proportion....my updates don't take "THAT'' long and I'm on a wireless connection.

It's called file compression like .zip or .rar.

So many factors involved here not just PSN. I think there should be a rule if your going to complain about download speeds or lag you should be required to post test resaults from speedguide.net and state weather your wired or wireless to rule out your internet connection.

I have seen identical updates on both consoles with CoD WaW and the 360 went much faster. I don't know why, maybe something to do with the PS3 architecture.

Updates really don't take that long to download and install from the PSN server when you do it at a time there not overloaded with everyone trying to get the updates at the same time.

Mine takes about 5 minutes to download. If you feel there is a problem you can always call your Internet Service Provider.

If it isn't your connection as a whole, then it must be your PS3 configuration or the way the PS3 reads your connection. I get 1MB a second so no it isn't sony's end and other people have made that claim other than me as well. It takes 3-5 minutes if that.

Depends how big the update is though, and mine aren't that long, but I do know that the 360 does download updates pretty quick, faster than PSN, but PSN isnt THAT slow it really depends on your connection and the size of the update.

It doesn't bother me. The thing that bothers me is whether there might randomly be a power cut when it its updating. That would be bad

Sometimes I'll lose my connection during a game update, but once it gets rolling it never takes more than 30 seconds or so.

Some games take a minute, some take 20. If the developer of a multi-platform game sticks a gazillion gigs in an update, what's the PS3 supposed to do about it?

You do know different places download at different speeds. Now i will use my PC as example. I am currently downloading a game from gamersgate and it is maxing at 90 kb/s while downloading anything from steam (valves online service) goes a minimum of 500 kb/s. Maybe Sony is limiting the bandwidth so save some money or some other reason.

I haven't found any of the downloads to be terrible on PSN (slower then Xbox Live, but hey i'm paying for that so i expect more). The only problem i have had is LBP updating. I ask media molecule this..... why haven't you just bundled the patches together? Why do have to download like 9 patches and install all 9 patches? I mean Blizzard found a way to do it why can't you? As far as i know Blizzard does bundle them with games liek Warcraft (don't know about WoW though... haven't played that in ages).

But yeah the download speeds are good enough for me. Compared to Steam i find everything slow, but just don't care.....

To me the download speeds seem identical between live and the psn. A lot of times the actual update installation takes longer than the download, so in that sense PS3 updates are definitely slower than 360 ones. Actual firmware updates are especially bad with the PS3.
