Why do we like Snake more than other video game main characters?

I mean, he is my favorite main character for a video game but why? There are other great main characters in video games like Kratos from God of War, Drake from Uncharted: Drake's Fortune... But why is Snake our favorite of them all? (For the people that think Snake is there favorite main character from a video game).

I love Snake because of his voice, his story, and I grew up with him.

Also, no other video game character is as capable of the sheer amount of bad ass as Snake.

Well technically Solid Snake originated on the MSX or NES and not playstation. But as far as Snake as a character that is presented in both a human light and a super human soldier view who is appropriate for action games, he just has the most depth of any character out there in a persistent series, period.

I suppose a the only other character who hold such endearing qualities that reappear in all of video games could be Mario, Sonic, Link, Samus, Master Chief, and perhaps Lara Croft or Kratos.

But by and large are none of those characters as fully fleshed out in as a "person" as Solid Snake (and Big Boss as well).

Snake is possibly the best developed character I have seen in video game history. He is also one of the most underrated video game characters ever. There is so much depth put into his character that it makes other characters who have been around for the past 20+ years seem bland. Now lets make no mistake, but Mario is (at least for me) the most reconizable video game character in the whole world, but he doesn't have as much depth as snake does.

The beauty about Snake's character is how realistict and human he really is, he is not the typical guy who kicks ass and destroys everything like its ok and you walk away with a happy ending, no. Snake knows that he is a cold killer, just like the next bad guy he faces, he is no different.

Honestly, Hideo Kojima really has done a huge job with developing Snake, the funny part is that this may not even be how he really wanted it to be based on how he explained his thoughts about his history with Metal Gear.

Snake (Solid) to me is a boring character. Unlike Big Boss (naked Snake) he has no inner personality. He is just bland character that has no depth to his character. Nothing stands out, and he is just there to do missions. ONLY time he shows something is when he talks about cardboard boxes and his love for them.

Boss is my favorite character in MGS with Big Boss being distant second.

ive been playing MGS games for the last 11 years scince i was 12! MGS is the reason i became a hardcore gamer! sure i played before but MGS1 blew my mind!!! snake is just a total bad a$$... doesnt take crap from no one and does things his way! he even smokes and has a beard! and in MGS3 we get to sport an eye patch! now if that doesnt defines bad a$$ i dont know what does... lol

yes i know MGS3 you play big boss not solid, but i consider all the snakes you play as throughout the saga as "Snake"

I dunno, he is just really interesting. He doesn't use snarky one lines like other action heroes and I actually felt that I was playing as a legend not some generic soldier.

i would consider MGS3 "Big boss" the same char as "Snake" they are both refered to as snake they have the same voice, the same mannorisms same everything... they are the same person from the gamer's perspective... its like playing solid back in time... even though i prefer the MGS3 verision of snake best its still the same as solid snake in all the other games... so people who say "big boss>Snake" it doesnt make sense lol

We see our selves in him. He's courageous but vulnerable. He brings forth good but sometimes through doing things some may consider as bad. He has addictions and enjoys certain pleasures that we all enjoy but sometimes don't like to admit. For some they see him as a father figure while others may see him as a friend. Snake may be a fictional character but he portrays nonfictional ideals. He is the most "REAL" gaming icon ever created.

Then he gets experiance during MGS3 game that changes him. he matures as the game story went on, and by the end of the game, Big Boss was entirely different character compared to what he started as.

Solid Snake barely showed any changes. Only his looks changed as games went on and who he was involved with, but as character goes he remained same. He did not mature, he did not get any kind of progress. He is always same snake who is more interested in getting the job done than any personal attachment.

Big Boss clearly showed plenty of attachment towards people and objects. Food, Boss, Paramedic, etc. Solid Snake never showed any of that. Even his friend Otacon, Solid Snake mostly left it work related than anything personal. Meryl too. Solid Snake absolutely never showed any kind of personal attachment towards anyone. All his relationship with other character has been strictly mission related.

Snake is a great character as far as videogames go, but i don't necessarily like him better than others. I think there are many other cooler ones out there, even if they only have 1 game. as far as a character that represents videogames as a whole, for me its Mario. he just reminds me of childhood and just having fun with games back in the day

But everyone knows, that when we talk about Snake, it's Solid.

I must admit that Snake is cool, but since the only game I have that you can play as him in is Brawl, I don't know much about him, so Mario, sonic, Megaman, and Samus (perferably Zero suit Samus :D)are my favorites.

for me it's because i grew up playing metal gear so snake is one of those larger tha like characters like huk hogan gi joe and the thunder cats

because no one can match up of how Snake is so badass

There are a bunch of characters I like more than Snake, also I don't think he is anymore fleshed out than any other character out there whose story spans multiple games and media like say the Prince of Persia or Samus Aran. I think most people flock to him simply because of the console allegiance thing, and Snake is the closest thing to a Sony mascot.

WE don't like him more, but I like him well enough because he reminds me of Kurt Russell in Escape from New York and because I grew up playing Metal Gear on NES so I have somewhat of an attachment to the IP.
