I've never understood it. I mean yeah it might cost more but I for one would be buying a lot of ps2 games. Seeing as how most are cheaper (in price) and there are a lot of great games for the ps2. They're still making them. For example, there are a lot of games I want to play on the ps3 but I never played the prequels on the ps2 so now I'm kind of iffy on whether to buy them.
I have a launch system with the ps2 hardware emulation and I never play any Ps2 games. I played God Of war 2 but that it it. I think most ppl have moved on or at least enough to not bother supporting BC.
I have a 80 gig BC ps3 upgraded to 500gig hdd, I have never played a ps2 game on it and never will. If you want to play ps2 games I have a tip for you. Buy a ps2 they're like $60 bucks.
I know everyone wants it. Why did they have to remove it? I don't get it. :(

I think cos eventually Sony will make available a full catologue of downloadable,to purchase,PS2 games on Playstation store-It'll be a great moneyspinner for them.And,of course,they'd have been adapted to run on any PS3 with built in emulation.
Sony needed to bring the costs of manufacture down and to continue adding the chips from the ps2 in to add bc was costing more than they wanted. There was rumours going around from a leaked Sega document saying that Sony had plans to release Dreamcast and PS2 games on the PSN. This document also had details about upcoming games which have proved to be correct, so prehaps it is something Sony have planned to announce at E3 this year that they are releasing the back catalouge of PS2 games on the PSN
Hmm, e3 possibly? This would be the end year for their 10 year life span on the ps2. Although im not getting my hopes up until its officially announced. Glad I got a 80g with bc.
When the ps3 was full load with options, people complained about the high price. Now sony made the system more affordable and people complain about features missing. I'm actually glad for the first there was a benefit for being an early adopter. At any rate, i wouldnt worry about BC for too much longer. I'm sure Sony will implement it soon so just be a little patient and it'll happen.
just because they patented it doesn't mean they got it working. They got the patent shortly after they removed the PS2 GPU and got so many negative comments.
If they were able to simulate PS2 games why havn't they released any re-hashed ps2 games through the PSN yet? Although with E3 coming up i may be sticking my foot in my mouth. How about that for an announcement. The PS3 will not have PS2 games available for download through the psn. I know i would sign up for some Socom 1 and 2 action.
I thought there was tell of Sony bringing back BC a while ago? It sucks though, I wanna be able to play the old multiplayer games like Timesplitters, Here Comes The Pain, etc. PS2 games on the store can't be far off surely?
Sony are still selling around 40,000 PS2s every week, I doubt it would be that many if PS3s were backwards compatable. And like others have said, by putting PS2 games on the playstation store they would make more money. I think this could happen when the "10 year life cycle" is up, sometime next year would be my guess, or when PS2s stop selling.
My first theory was that they were trying to cut cost down. Second, PS2's are still selling ridiculously well so why bother incorporating them in PS3s? Thirdly, I think Sony wants gamers to "move on" to PS3 games and leave the PS2 era. But apparently, people are still trapped in the PS2 days. Not that it's a bad thing.
When the original Ps3 came out Sony had to take a cut on every single PS3 that sold due to demanding prices. I want to say they lost anywhere from $100-$200 per sell even though the system cost $500.
The chopped up PS3 was to increase profit. you can't blame them for this or would you have rather paid $700+ for one?
I think they will not make it BC because the PS2 still sells. The BS spread about production costs and complications is a load of crap. It's all about money and as soon as the PS2 stops selling I reckon Sony will release BC PS3's.
I hope they do at least and they hope they will because people like me (I can't be the only one) will not be buying a PS3 until they do!
It doesn't bother me. I still have my PS2, and I wouldn't have paid an extra $100 just to have BC on my PS3. Then again I got my PS3 when they were $400 and didn't have BC anyways. Ah well...

sony was bleeding money cuz they were at a deficit with every 20gb and 60gb PS3 sold, so they took it out of all ps3s to save on the production costs of them and to help bring them out of the deficit. Why do you think there rnt 4 usb ports? or any memory card readers? They were cut out to save $$
I know I wanted it to save space but when PS4 finally comes out. I expect it to be backwards compatible with both PS2 and PS3. I have huge ass collection of games for all these consoles. Stacking 3 consoles next to eachother isn't ideal at all. God forbid what happens when PS5 comes out.

you can get a used ps2 slim for $40 from ebgames or try craigslist if you really want to play some PS2 games.

True, but PS2 games are so much better on the PS3 because of the wireless first party controller, the virtual memory cards the PS3 creates and the scaling and smoothing of the games.
emulation is possible i think the GPU could emulate PS2 easy just i don't know about the SPEs but maybe they could do it off the core alone
but sony will not untill they stop selling ps2s because people still buy them (mainly childeren and bought as replacements)

it can.. Sony recently patented a way to completely emulate PS2 games by software only.. they just won't release it for some stupid reason... The fact that PS2s still sell is a stupid reason? I don't like it, but it clearly makes sense. They'll probably wait a while before either allowing emulation through an update(very unlikely), release new PS3s with BC to increase sales(could happen), or only provide software emulation on PS2 games purchased through PSN(Most likely if they're doing it purely for money, and not sales).
to save money, back then the system sold for like $600 but cost like $900+ per unit to make, and Sony was worried that the vast library of PS2 titles available at retail would hurt PS3 game sales, to tell the truth the only game I really liked on the PS3 the first year was Motorstorm, I sorta only liked Heavenly Sword and Uncharted. I ended up buying more new released PS2 games to play on my PS3 than PS3 games, games like Persona 3, God of War 2, Odin Sphere, GrimGrimoire, and in 2008 Obscure 2, Persona 4, Devil Summoner 2, luckily by the end of 2008 there were more exclusives to my liking, like LBP and Motorstorm 2 anyhow, I don't have a PS2 anymore, or an old TV for that matter, I need a 60GB PS3 to play my PS2 games as the PS3 is the only way to de-interlace the games for play on a HDTV, you can still play PS2s on HDTV but they look like crap in comparison

Backwards compatible - meaning it can play PS2 games. All PS3s are BC with original playstation games.

I've had a PS2 since 2004, but I'd love to play all my PS1,PS2, and PS3 games on one console. You don't have to connect as many systems to one TV/moniter, and you'll be able to use all the features of the PS3 while you play your PS2 games, which is nice bonus(yes, I know you can't use the XMB while PS1/PS2 games are running).

Because it requires more hardware, more hardware meant more construction and more money... When basically everyone has a PS2 then there is no need to put in extra features or hardwarewhen its not nessecary... Sure i was a little upset but come on dust off the PS2 and your back in business, i don't why this is such a big deal plus PS2's are cheaper than a single game these days. Plus they were sliming the PS3 so shedding weight is good.
