Even though my PS3 didn't get bricked by the 2.40 firmware update (so far), I'm still looking for answers as to why it's bricking systems. Post all your theories, news, and possibilities as to why 2.40 is bricking PS3s. Here's what I know and what I think could be causing the problems:

Some say that the servers were overloaded upon the release of the 2.40 update and started sending out corrupted packets of data therefore causing bricking in some PS3s.

It's possible that this whole problem with bricking happened only in a few isolated cases but 360 fanboys blew it all out of proportion.

The 2.40 update might not be causing the bricking itself but instead acts like a catalyst that increased the chances of other bugs and glitches already in the PS3 and certain games from happening.

According to a page in Yahoo news, sony was attacked by a virus on the day of the update. Not sure if that has anything at all to do with bricking systems but it's good to know.

I'm going to keep this bumped until sony can officially say that 2.40 is safe to install.

During the install process their is a bug which in a few select cases caused PS3's to reset when attempting to boot up games...

Also SONY servers in some parts of the world become overloaded for a few hours which prevented some people from viewing others Trophies...

As far as im aware the number of PS3's which suffered from porblems or being 'bricked' so low that SONY is considering it a normal hardware problem... i mean SONY took 2.40 down due sites like 1up, Gamespot, gametrailer, etc all reporting 2.40 was bricking PS3... after spending a day checking the update for problems they released it again -- exactly the same. IF their was a problem with 2.40 bricking PS3's SONY would of done something like release 2.41 which either fixed the problem or disabled anything they thought might have the potential to create a problem.

I honestly doubt that.. I think it's brilliantly coded.. If you take a game, that uses most capacity of the machine.. You expect it not to lag? The game doesn't stop meanwhile your using in-game XMB.. On the oppesite though, I've had better experience with fluently/smooth use of the in-game XMB, compared to the 360 dashboard.. So far I'm yet to experience crashes during the use of XMB, which I am on my Elite, when I use that in-game dashboard...

As for the reason why some PS3's getting bricked is quite a mystery.. I doubt it has anything to do with the firmware being corrupt, as the firmware updates checks for that before installing, safety precaution.. Only very old hardware doesn't check for corrupted data..

I think it's more likely that this is a case of having 'special' setup on the ps3.. As it is not based on one special ps3, obviously, as it's hitting 60gb, 40gb, (haven't heard of the 20gb, but probably the same).. etc... It's likely it's about what you got currently on the hdd, whats installed, whats activated etc.. and some people got a 'wrong' mixture of the settings..

Agreed, the PS3 didn't brick PS3s as far as im aware of. It just messed them up during installation. So the people who took all those drastic mesures were overreacting and should just wait for a patch...

Could the coding for an in game XMB be causing some games to either not start or crash/freeze?

yeah accessing the XMB while on a loading screen would be very taxing on the machine. of sourse its gonna freeze. i haven't even tried to get into XMB during loading cause i just figured it would happen.

very true sometimes like when using programs such as xfire on a pc, it lags a bit if loading a level.

There is nothing wrong with 2.40. Your name is nintendofan. You don't have a single PS3 game on your profile. Your just a wii fanboy trying to say that sony did a bad job with 2.40

if sony had to take the update down then there was obviously something wrong with it. just cause his name is nintendofan doesn't mean he's in here to start a fight.

Ok so maybe there is something wrong with 2.4 but I have seen no actual PS3 owners say that they have had there PS3 bricking because of 2.4. Only wii and xbox 360 owners have been making up crap about 2.4. Now maybe this guy is a PS3 owner who is concerened but I don't think so.

So you're saying that all of the people complaining of their PS3's being messed up are people who don't even own one? How could you know that? Please drop the blind defense of 2.4. If it were problem-free then Sony would not have pulled it. It's as simple as that.

Sony pulled it because of people on sites complaining that their PS3's were bricking. For all we know it could have just been Xbox fanboys making up crap. And btw have any of you looked at this guys game list. Not a single PS3 game but he has tons of wii, gamecube and DS games. I have every right to be suspicious

my ps3 is working fine(touch wood), i Bought Metal gear solid 4 just about a couple of days, and i don't have any trouble, i think that the reason of the briking ps3 is for the custom ps3 themes, we know that 2.40 add some iccons and options, and some custom themes may not support the upgrade, thats what i think, that may be the reason that some ps3 stop in the waves.

what do you think guys ???????????????

No, it's not the custom themes. This works fine for me and others have confirmed this as well.

I have a feeling that this is just a hoax. Sony's taking it seriously anyway though, since I guess they would want to avoid any real problems if possible.

StanAce

then it's not the custom themes it must be a corrupted firmware( that because that day was too much people downloading fron the same server)

anyway this is not going well with the "coments" of other consoles fanboys.

There were surveys in the official site and in here. 98% were fine but 2% had problems?

I heard that people who have the PS3 automatically start a game had problems since when the PS3 restarts it boots the game and if they try and go back there is a conflict or something.
