Why is console gaming dying?

As you can see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_game_consoles playstation sales have gone down drasticly since the playstation 2.

Playstation 2: 155 mil

playstation 3: 84 mil

playstation 4: 43.5 mil

Thats an insane amount of people who stopped playing playstation.

The ps2 is the best selling system of all time. Literally no other console compares to it. So thats not proof of anything. But based on this and your other thread, i am assuming you're a bit of a troll.

@mcpanties: Well for one you can't compare data from this gen until it is finished.

Two last gen was shit. I honestly expect PS4 and it's slim models to outsell PS3 in the next three years. If Xbox 360 wasn't as cheap as it was I honestly expect last gen would have crashed and burned.

Console gaming isn't dying. It is just that PS2 was THAT good. So comparing by generation is pointless.

If you want to do a proper comparison do ALL consoles in the generation:

PS1 + N64 + Sega Saturn = 144.92 million (according to Wikipedia)

PS2 + Gamecube + Dreamcast + Xbox = 209.87 million (according to Wikipedia)

360 + PS3 + Wii = 272.12 million (according to Wikipedia)

By that trend console gaming is going UP. This gen isn't over and it may be that overall it manages less console sales. For many reasons. The fact that they are now ditching the generational console cycle certainly won't help. The fact the Wii U was dog shit won't help either.

And developers continuing to poison the water supply with broken/shit games, season passes and microtransactions DEFINITELY isn't helping.

People (mainly fanboys) have been screaming that console gaming is dying. PC gaming is dying. Mobile games are dying. They have always been wrong in every single case.

The PS4 has sold more than the PS3 did when it was 3 years into its life cycle. I don't doubt the PS2 will remain the most sold Playstation console, but still, your analysis is terrible. Whether you're trying to claim that console sales in general are sliding or just Playstation sales are sliding, you're just wrong.

It's not, it's bigger than ever before, and those sales numbers are off (and the PS4 is hardly done as we are still mid-gen).

@mcpanties: I think a large part of it might be that more people are content with smartphone gaming these days, and see no reason to spend more money on a stand-alone gaming system.

Personally, I like handheld game systems quite a bit. And I really can't see myself owning a console while living in my apartment because it would probably be too loud.

I think for a lot of gamers, a lot of these newer systems can't really replace the older ones we have fond memories of.

Consoles need competition, given the massive flop the xbone has been Sony has no competition whatsoever yet they still Uncharted 4...

Surely you're capable enough to use Google yourself and find a source.

Because both platforms are piss weak, especially the xbone but at least Sony has quality exclusives...
