Why is it so hard to download game updates?

I just got Mass Effect 3 and when I go to play it, the game wants me to download the 1.04 update. No problem, it's just 21MB should take no time right?? Well just like every other time, it took me 10 tries before the download would stop locking up on me. Does this happen to anyone else?

Are you sure that there isn't anything fishy about your connection?

Probably a problem with your connection, or else you were trying to download it at the same same time as a ton of other people or something like that. I don't think I've ever had a problem with downloading a game update.

I think those updates come directly form the publisher's servers, bypassing PSN. I could download that stuff while PSN was down for that month.

If using Wifi, never use the internet while PS3 is downloading updates. Only time you'll get away with it is when using the download in background option, which isn't available when patching games. If the PS3's connection times out, your Download stops and you have to download from the beginning.
