I wonder. It was a perfect game getting a 9.5. All went well but why has it just sold 2 million. 2.1 exactly. I have thought about it a lot but still cant figure it out. Being a big fan and when sony delivers everything so well and it came out with the price drop as well but still the results arent up to the mark. I know that 2.1 is not less but lets face it the number is below expectations.

anyone can explain this. The only explanation i can tell is that with time it will increase but i still cant be sure about it.

How much is enough? Not every game produces Halo-like numbers, most are considered a success just pushing past 1 million.

Exactly.

Also consider the fact that it wasn't released on the Xbox.

Agreed. Sure it would be nice to see our favorite games hitting 13-million units sold and up, but realistically that probably won't happen too often.

If Uncharted 2 wasn't an exclusive and on 360,PS3 and PC it would sell about 10 million.

2.1 Million copies in one month is pretty damn good, especially considering that PS3 has the lowest install base of the three consoles right now. Word of mouth (and a handful of GotY awards) will keep U2: Among Thieves selling for a long time. Anything selling over 1 million is pretty much guaranteed a sequel anyway.

You're missing a pretty significant puzzle piece here.

Consider this: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune has a lifetime sales figure of around 2.5 million currently. That's after TWO YEARS. Naughty Dog stated that they would be happy selling 2.5 million copies of Uncharted 2. The fact that it's already at 2.1 million copies sold after just over two months is great. Now add another 22 months to that. How many sales do you think it will have then?

Selling a 2 million copies of a CD is a great feat. You don't see anybody complaining about going Double Platinum.

It's not below expectations, that's a very strong number for just 2 months. Uncharted isn't the kind of game that does mega numbers straight away, I can guarantee ND are happy with it.

actually 1 million is enough for the devs....because making a game like uncharted 2 barely costed 5-10 million maximum... and every copy costs 60 dollars...so 60 multiply by 2 million...dont tell me that number isnt big..

I don't think it mattered it wasn't releaesd on the 360. For a flagship game with so much hype (which it deserved and delivered), and the amount of PS3 units sold, you would of thought it would sell more than that. Not saying 2.1 million is bad, it's great, but considering how many PS3 units there are out there, it just seems a little low. I believe that's what TC was trying to convey, I think. :) I thought the same thing too though.

You can't just take the 60$ and multiply it by the units sold and assume that's their net profit. There is a hefty cost for printing on blu-ray blanks and the manual, casing and colour printing (that's already like 5$ off the profit, minimum). Then you have to account for fees owed to suppliers, distributors, retailers, shippers, and licensing fees to Sony. Then you've got revenue expenses, employment insurance, etc At most, you'd get like 50% of the unit cost as retained earnings. You'd get lucky to reach even $75.

Actually, you're both right. They make ~120million AFTER paying supply, distribution, retailer, etc etc. That's what publishers do - they invest their own money up front and expect *hope* they do more than break even. That's why the business isn't profitable, even though it is, because in the very end they may make 10-20 million, which is double profit, but out of 120mil seems small numbers. I think what people don't realize when it comes to sales, for every 1 (or 2mil) people who buy a new retail copy, 2-200 (exagerated) people buy that copy used. So 2 million may have already reached 4 million by now, which is why the big push for digital distribution.

because with all the PS3s sold not all of them are gamers, some just BD owners. and not all gamers are interested in uncharted...as hard for you to believe as that may be.....but it is what it is...

and that means what exactly....PS3 owners (most of us) are gamers too. what does being released on the xbox have to do with anything???

They're implying that it would've sold more copies if it were a multiplat, which is kinda hard to argue against. Granted, Modern Warfare 2 didn't sell as much on the PS3 as it did on the other console, but if it was available in only one place it would've sold less just based on accessibility.
