Since Sony studio make and owns Spiderman movies, why isn't Sony Spiderman 3 PS3 exclusive?

I think he means in terms of the movie being a sony relese.

Sony Pictures sells the licencing rights to companies that do multiplatform titles because it means more money in royalties for many systems as oposed to first party development costs and profits from a single system's sales.

In the case of Ghostbusters, Sony had sold the rights to a developer that "chose" to make it for one system (although the fact thet development has stalled means there's something else involved, likely the fact that they can't use sound clips from the movies which sony still owns and isnt giving the rights away too so they have to get either imitators or the actual actors to voice the game.)

Sigh. Marvel gave Sony the movie rights. Sony licences the movie rights to a company that makes the games. Sony owns the voices, font, etc. in the movie.

Not for products based on the movies, Sony owns those. The real reason is that Sony Pictures feel they'll earn more from letting a 3'rd party studio make the game multi platform. To make a game one doesn't just need a budget but also a talented staff and Sony's game developers are already occupied with in house franchises.

Quick answer is $$.

The game rights belong to activision. It's up to them to release on what platform they think is going to make the most money. Either way they are paying the same amount of money to own the rights to the game, so if activision thinks they can make more money just releasing it on one platform.....I'm sure they would do it. This is a case where they would be very stupid not to release multiplatform. I think we are going to start to get to a point where all titles will be multiplatform (just look at grandtheft auto later in the year) UNLESS SOE, MS, or NIN pay a butt load of money for exclusive rights (it would have to be a LOT to make up for the fact you are losing millions having it on one system).

This btw would be different if PS3 held a commanding lead in market share. Right now it makes no sense IMO to give exclusive rights to anyone based on the fact no one is a clear leader in the market. Wait another year and if you have PS3 or X360 take a commanding lead in hardware marketshare, you might start to see some big exculsives for the winner.

Sony Pictures backs the movie, they dont own the rights to Spiderman. Marvel does. Marvel sold the MOVIE rights to Sony, but publishing rights are different, as they are Activision and Marvel gives Activision rights to the movie information.

Marvel sold the movie license to Sony and the game license to Activision. Activision can do pretty much whatever they want with it.

Activision announced today that the company has signed an agreement with Spider-Man Merchandising L.P., a limited partnership between Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures Consumer Products, to extend its exclusive worldwide publishing rights to the phenomenally successful Spider-Man motion pictures through 2017. The license grants Activision the right to publish entertainment software products based on subsequent Spider-Man movie sequels or new television series.

Bottom line is it in their company's best intrest (meaning, how do they make more $$......one exclusive system or multisystem). actually, it does answer his question. Sony doesn't own the rights to the game so it's not their choice of which platforms it will be on. that's why it is not PS exclusive(which was his question).

please read. http://gba.pcvsconsole.com/view.php?news=3129 in that link, you will see that Activision gets their licensing for the movie-based games from both Marvel and Sony. Neither company has more say than the other since it is a joint partnership.

I don't really care who Activision makes the game for. It looks terrible. They have a lot of work to do if they want to have it ready by this summer. I don't plan on buying it.

well it doesnt matter cause when we talk about SONY we are talking about columbia picturs sony movie division.. they have nothing to do with games.. and i doubt they care about ps3 exclusive games

actually, it does answer his question. Sony doesn't own the rights to the game so it's not their choice of which platforms it will be on. that's why it is not PS exclusive(which was his question).

WRONG... It's Sony and Marvel it's their contract they have more control than activision.

well one thing we are forgetting is.. why wasnt spiderman 2 exclusive to ps2? My guess is that in marvel's licencing contract with sony about making the games.. the games will always be multiplatform to maximize profits based on marvel's spiderman licence. So if sony is letting marvel make a game based on the sony movie then it must be some contractal agreement they have with each other to have all spiderman games multiplat, probably something sony doesnt want but probably they had to do to get the movie licence.

Do you know Lord of the Rings? EA only got the rights to base its games on the movies and not the books. In case of Spiderman Activision needs permission from Sony to base games on the movies but if you haven't noticed the games also got characters which aren't in the movies but only in the comics which they need the rights from Marvel to use.

spider-man 2 games were multi platform. its gonna be the same for part 3. it doesn't have to be an exclusive cuz if it was they wouldn't make a WHOLE lot of money off the ps3 game as is.

There is no right answer. Yes marvel owns the IP rights but it doesn't mean that it gets to decide what the game platforms should be (or may be it does but it doesn't mean Sony wouldn't be compensated for that). There was probably an arrangement that satisfied both parties (Marvel and Sony). E.g. Sony could get to keep more film sales revenues as opposed to any other studio that would make a film. These things are decided by huge IP valuation studies which involves predicting revenue split based on expected contribution of an IP.

In case of Spiderman Activision needs permission from Sony to base games on the movies but if you haven't noticed the games also got characters which aren't in the movies but only in the comics which they need the rights from Marvel to use.

Actually EA got also the rights to make games based on the books.:P
But EA and LOTR is a good example, because they have the right to make games based on the movies and books while Turbine who makes LOTR Online has bought the rights to make games based only on the books. EA bought the right to make games based on the movies from New Line Cinema who owns the movies rights.
It's the same thing with Spider Man.

It's all about the money, why do you think the first 2 spider-man games were multiplatform, hell even ultimate spiderman was multiplatform(all from activision) once they got the rights from sony and marvel, they can choose to multiplatform it, what does it matter to sony the more systems they make it for, the more games they will sell hence much more $$$$. This is like asking why would the new sony vaio laptop have windows vista from microsoft and blu ray from sony, arent those companies in direct competition with each other? the answer is when it comes to making money, nothing is exclusive :)

Sony movie division has nothing to do with the division. Marvel gave Sony the rights to make the movie. Marvel gave Activison the rights to make its games and Activision mostly releases games for all current systems and handhelds. And just putting it on the no rumble ps3 would be a dumb idea because every system has some way to utilize Spiderman so that the game is fun all around.

P.S.

And the company gets more money bringing it across all consoles and handhelds.

lol, ooh yes they do. It's stupid for Sony's picture to make it Sony exclusives when all licensed spiderman 3 sold, Sony Pictures and Marvel do get some money. MS want to help me make money, I say go ahead.
